Incident at the gas station

Seems to me the attendant wasn't very good at his job. First he couldn't even get the right pump going, for whatever reason. Then he screwed up the amount?
I pre pay for fuel almost exclusively with cash from gigs. I have NEVER had a cashier do this. I always take note of the pump number, and usually the cashier will confirm, "the white pickup?" because they're competent at their job.

Then he touched a customers vehicle? He should have never gotten physical. I would've taken that as a threat. Instead of getting physical, he should have just said, "fine I'll have to call the police" wrote down the plates, or maybe a quick cellphone pic, and called them. True, they may or may not have showed up at all over $7.
He's the one who escalated the situation. 3rd mistake of the interaction.
Just my uninformed opinion.

If it's anything like Tacoma, the police report will eventually get filed with the prosecutor's office after an assigned detective has done some follow-up investigation (looked you up via the plates). The police would have only had the clerk's side of the story (paid for $20 but pumped $27, when he tried to get the proper amount of money you assaulted him with your vehicle and took off).

Probably just a misdenmeanor, but if you seriously hurt the man's nuts, he had to go to ER and have emergency surgery to save or remove a testicle or, worse yet, the dude died of internal bleeding, you'd be looking at a felony charge square in the face for murder.

Or nothing will come of it.

Unfortunately, that charging decision could be months down the line.

That $7 could end up costing many thousands of dollars and potentially your freedom.

You might consider going back and paying the $7 immediately and apologizing to the clerk. By doing this, you'll know if the guy is okay, and if a report hasn't been made yet, the police might not be called. But if they still are, it will look very good on your part for taking responsibility for your wrongdoing and making right. A prosecutor reading the report might consider not charging in light of your actions.

Good luck.

Please wear only tighty whitey underwear and a white tanktop undershirt stained with pizza sauce for the next couple of days while at home, so if the police do show up you are dressed for T.V. And have a beer next to you at all times so if they come in you can yell, "Come on man, I need to put a koozie on my beer".
Keep going on and on about needing a koozie on your beer so it will be ready for you when you get back.

And a little man a foot shorter and a hundred pounds lighter is threatening me.
As I am reading your post I am visualizing a little man who looks like Danny DeVito trying to stop you from leaving the station. Just sayin

OP, I don't usually bring it up, but I am way too black to try that! I could just imagine getting my head crack by some cop who swears I am a senior citizen gang banger.

The bottom line is to watch that gauge like a hawk.
I'm not sure if everyone understands how self serve gas works in New York City. I know it's different upstate and I know it's different out of state. Prepay first. Whether cash or credit. You pay twenty in cash before and twenty is what you get. The pump stops pumping at twenty. He screwed that up.

I'm not discounting the possibility that there may be repercussions for my actions.

Dagned speel chicker!
I don't think the gas attendant will be reproducing for a day or two.:woot:

No sir. You prepay twenty cash. Twenty is what the pump pumps. This happens unless the cashier screws up. I would've covered for his mistake if he'd been nice about it.

Every prepay that I know of stops automatically. Usually it slows down way before and takes forever to reach the full amount.
Therefore, I never pay with cash unless I'm running from the cops or something.

Pre-pay at the pump has actually made it all the way out here even. It works, most of the time, like you say, even with our big glass bottles on top. It is an electromechanical system at best, a microprocessor control device at worse.
The pump screwed up or the attendant screwed up, no doubt about that. You had no control over those things. A lot of what transpired after that was within your control.
