The album Lateralus has three or four different track listings on the net (including the original), but as far as I am concerned only two were legit and intended. The original track listing, and then the Lateralus Prophecy, which rearranged the track listing, and the tracks flow incredibly well and it gives a slightly different meaning to the album due to the order. People do read too much in their music often, but that is a good thing (as long as they are not overbearing about it).

I do not think anyone will ever know their true intentions really... Danny Carey is very into the occult and such, Maynard as well. Maynard constantly jokes in interviews and is a very strange man, no one will know what he really meant when he wrote it, if it is satire, serious, or what.

I do know that songs like 46&2 do have a great significance in theoretical territories. People say that 46&2 (Making 48 chromosomes in total) is the next step in human evolution where we evolve beyond our human bodies and into something greater. There is a lot of stories and ideas surrounding this kind of thing.

Any mathematical significance in their music (which there is a lot of, and a lot more than just the Fibonacci Sequence) is fully intentional, they do it a lot.

Very cool really. It takes music to an entirely different level by doing things like this. It adds thought to the process rather than sitting down and playing 4/4 and chords over and over.

I saw Tool for the first time last year...and have to say it was probably one of the best shows I have seen....and I have seen a lot.

But, criticize the band however you like, but the guys are geniuses....it's hard for 3 musicians and a singer to put out the intelligent sound that they do....it's quite amazing...whether you like their music or not.

the problem I always have with that order is that the reasoning behind it is to not split up Parabol(a) but the dude has no problem ripping apart the glory that is D/R/T.

It cracks me up how "into it" Tool fans get. I keep trying to like them, I can't get through an entire album I get far too bored. I don't know if making all the songs sound the same is some concept they were going for, but it doesn't do it for me. I think Tool is the most overrated band ever.

I've honestly tried so many times for the benefit of my friends (huge Tool fans) but end up disgusted and turning it off. I can't say it's the most uninteresting music I've ever heard, I'd listen to Tool before Nickelback or Creed... anything like that. But it's like the same song over and over, I think Maynard's vocals are what annoy me: Half the time to me it sounds like he can't even stay awake to record what they're doing.

Great drumming though.

I'll second everything said in this post. There are times when the vocals really mesh into the music for me, and it sounds really great, but those moments are far outweighed by the times where he just quietly drones away without adding anything to the complete package, and, if anything, detracting from it.

I wouldn't say I "end up disgusted" but I can only listen to Tool in small doses. I've made CDs/playlists that have a Tool song in the midst of other stuff and I dig it, but whenever I put on a whole album I end up switching it out for something else halfway through.

For all you guys with their complaints in the last few posts, maybe you should try looking up the lyrics to their songs and following along with the song as it goes. It definitely gave more meaning to a lot of their songs for me when I read the exact lyrics.

Thanks man, I just created a playlist using that order and I'm listening to it now.. I always liked them but usually take them in smaller doses.. I'll check out this whole album on my next long drive though..

i've listened to lateralus so many times that the original track order is ingrained in my brain. i'll try to give the weird ordering a listen.

and what in the aytch does this ordering have to do with fibonacci?

7-5=2. check, i guess, if we're skipping the a_0 term.

8-5=3.

8-4=4, not 5.

um... 6+7 = 1 mod 12.

7+5 = 1 mod 11.

5+8= 2 mod 11.

etc.
