I believe it is a thin veneer and then black fade around the edge.

Found it on line from a shop in Massachusetts. I couldn't get any info about what the seller actually did even though it was sold on consignment.

Me too! Although last year I did buy a Candy Red Metallic Musicman Big Al, which might be my #1 bass now, surpassing my beloved Stingrays. For me and the basses I've always bought, it's an interesting and unusual finish, but definitely not compared to what's been posted here.
