Introducing songs with dumb jokes

"don't forget to tip your waitress, she's pregnant, on drugs, and needs the money!

...OK, i'm kidding, she's not pregnant."

I used to be in a band with a dude who'd do that... cringe worthy, every time... after a while it got to the point where whenever he'd open his mouth in between songs, people would get more of a kick out of the fact that I was shooting knives out of my eyes at him...

Yeah, didn't stick around there for long.

"This next song uses clever objectification of a woman to exemplify my utter disdain for peas."

"This next song was 100% written by me. Two weeks later, the rest of the band re-wrote the music and changed all the lyrics."

"You look like a fun crowd with a decent sense of humor. I bet you know tons of awesome jokes. Have you heard the one about the rock band that played a super badass song, causing the entire audience to jump out onto the floor?" **play heaviest song**

FWIW, nobody has better song introductions than the Flight of the Conchords.

"This next song is not Tommy the Cat."- Les Claypool

In all seriousness, it takes a very specific band appearance and attitude to be able to pull off pre-song jokes. Primus, Rush, and groups like that that have a clear sense of humor can do it; guys trying too hard to force humor between songs cannot.

"I wrote this song after seeing a beautiful act of kindness and compassion....
A lady with not much to her name gave all her recently bought groceries to someone in even worse financial shape then she was...The lady that received the items, witch included a whole chicken, was touched to tears"......

"This song is called Freebird"......

my last band had a song called "its never really 'OVER' over"

we'd dedicate it to something different every night.

"this song is about [band member's name]'s never ending love for men. its called its never really over over"

"this song is about [band member's name]'s anti-showering protest. its called its never really over over"

something new came up every night.

Not exactly a joke, but in our last gig (I'm the singer) I introduced our last song this way:

"This is a new original song. We wrote it yesterday and it's only halfways. It doesn't have a title yet, and I'm gonna make up the lyrics right now as I sing. Since we only have half song, we'll play it twice without stopping because if not, it would be too short. And you won't notice."

People moshed like hell, and no one gave a s**t about what I was screaming.
I love being in a metal band.

On occasion,I will introduce a song as being " a favorite of the horn section".

We have bass,drums,harmonica,2 guitars.No horns.

No worries mate, harmonica is almost as annoying as horns when used in the right context.

Love horns, love harp, but like anything else, it's all about time and place and for some reason most harp players can never seem to get that part of it right.

Tasty harp is IMHO one of the hardest things to pull off well and do so consistently. While it certainly qualifies in my book as one of the "look at me" instruments, most harp players suffer from the misconception it's a "look at me all the time" instrument.

EDIT: Using the power of Google, I now know that you were with the Mr. T Experience from 1989 to 1995 and played bass on 4 releases, to the best of my knowledge... You also played bass with Samiam on two albums. Congratulations on being the man, and holy crap to I feel creepy for being able to dig that up. :D

Behold, the power of GOOGLE! It can turn anyone into a stalker!
