INXS Rock Star Debuts

As a lifetime despiser of reality TV I can truly say I kinda liked it. If they stick to the performances and stay away from all the other B.S. I may keep watching.

+1.

I was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty decent most of the time, but it had annoying moments, too.

You guys just don't get it...It's not about INXS at all.... :)

It's all about the house band. :D

disclaimer:that statement is a joke so don't get all crazy on me. with that being said it just aint that funny now.

Actually the house band kicked booty, but in point of fact, they are SUPERIOR musicians. Here's why. We are made to believe the contestants have one hour to choose a song and sing it for INXS and Dave Navarro.

Fifteen contestants--fifteen different songs and sixty minutes to prepare. That's four minutes per song for the contestants and band to prepare each song. Man! They are GOOD. It would take tremendously experienced musicians to pull that one off and still play as well as they did last night.

One wonders why at no time did Brooke Burke or Dave Navarro, the show's hosts acknowledge the musicians in that band.

Yeah!!!! That's one I told my wife last night too. I said see the band knows all the songs, and they still get the shaft. Let me go up there and play you would notice the band then..I would get stuff thrown at me, but I'd be noticed.:)

I wounder if half of what they said about an hour to pick a song wasn't just BS. A lot of times TV likes to lie for the whole dramatic effect. :hmm:

It didn't seem to be mentioned on the show, but I'd bet that the 15 contestants were given a list of songs to choose from in that hour, probably somewhat similar to what happened with the 14 remaining at the end. Maybe they had more songs to choose from, but I seriously doubt that each contestant simply picked a song from his or her own repertoire and the band knew it.

Agreed. What tipped me off to the deception was that the band knew the arrangements and the singers did too. Also some of the songs were shorter than the originals.

Even if this band is Los Angeles' top cover band, I doubt they could have fifteen singers just hand them sheet music and procede to play from that music right off the bat, beautifully co-ordinated with the vocalists like a human karaoke machine.

So if we have that deception, what other decptive curveballs will the show throw us? Could it be that INXS all ready knows which singer they want to hire? All the rest is just for publicity. I prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt, but similar conspiracy theories do pop up every season of American Idol...none ever proven however.

I tuned in briefly last night.
The chick in the dreadlocks will win this thing...write it down.

The cover/backing band?
What I heard was good, not great.

Once upon a time, VH-1 had a show, "Battle Of The Cover Bands"(?).
Supposedly, these bands would play 'on the fly'-
The Judges would ask the band to play, say, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but in a loungey-Swing vibe; or "Respect", but in a Ska feel(which was so ridiculously fast that the singer could only get out "R-E-S-P-C-T"...funny as Hell).
Anyway, you would see the band mull things over & then break right into it. If that was 'on the fly', it got my attention.

Yeah, she's my pick, too.

There was that one blonde (of the several) who went over to some of the band members while she was singing, and I had been waiting for someone to do that. I thought, this is a competition to front a band, not to get a backing band. And that seemed to score some points with Dave Navarro and the INXS members.

The arrangement of "California Dreaming" was really good, a departure from the other mostly karaoke-like arrangements.

I was hanging out with some of the producers on the RockStar show at the "Princes of Malibu" premiere. Great pix of "celebs" here:

GREAT choice of words, laughing uncontrollably.... :)

Please tell me that you are NOT a FISH fan. If so, then you remember Claude Lemieux's back-hander over Mike Liut's shoulder during the Habs 1986 Cup Run. My brother is a huge Whale/Canes fan. :)

I hear Paula Abdul's going to give one of the male contestants a leg up … sorry, poor choice of words. ;)

I do remember it. Seventh game, OT. One goal away …

I'm not a Cane fan, just a Whaler fan, part of the Great Green Diaspora. ;)

Ok, I must confess that I watched this last night. I really abhorr reality tv so this was a stretch for me. I liked it. I liked the professional feedback they gave. The band smoked although I do have to knock points off of the drummer for lunching the drum part on I Want You To Want Me. I will tune in again tonight. And i agree that the girl with the dreads' will win. She rocked.

I just KNEW there would be a good thread on this in TalkBass!
Can't get more interesting than hearing what a bunch of bass players (me too) have to say- There's bound to be as many different opinions on this as there are styles and skill-levels of playing here!

First off, thanks to PassinWind for the link to the House Band- I didn't know or recognize these players offhand, but it was obvious to me that they were experienced, pro-level players with solid credentials and chops- Their bios bore that out- They do a great job IMO of covering the tunes, and no doubt they all can PLAY! Sasha knows how to handle the bassist's role, that's for sure.

As for INXS, I always thought they had a nice feel in their prime, and was shocked at the death of their singer. It always amazes me, having struggled on the road in clubs, driving to gigs in a van, etc, for nominal $$, when someone who reaches the top, loses it-assuming that was the case with him. Same with Cobain and others.
I understand that professional success and its financial rewards don't necessarily equate to personal happiness-Believe me, you can have happiness, lots of it, without being a rock star, even if all you want to do is play music for a living. I just am amazed at how one can lose perspective sometimes...
At any rate, I give props to INXS for the success they've had, and even as suggested, if this is a way to re-vive a dormant career, well, at least they HAD a career to revive!!
So good for them, nobody is forcing them to do this-

As for the contestants- it's a little surreal to me. They all can sing, some better than others, they certainly can all perform, although some of it seems like posturing to me.
A few (don't want to get into debates) seem to me to be posers-that is to say, lounge singer chops and quality, or cabaret artists who are dressing and acting like a "Rocker"
to win this show---Hey, it's cool, it's show biz. Some seem to be livin' the life, real hard-core R'nRollers, too.
Kinda not my thing, I'm more the Marcus Miller/Reginal Veal type, but hey, that's me!
It's still entertaining to watch, and that's the bottom line I guess. Controversy is good for ratings--- so here's mine-
I think the chick with dreads is a poser-she sings well and has the charisma, she is talented, I mean her no disrespect, really!
But to me, the 'dreads looked weaved on, like a costume for a part she wants to play- She's an actress to me.
Hey young lady, do your thing and more power to ya- Please, no flames- just my viewpoint!!!!!
My vote for the most talent, charisma, and best fit for new INXS frontman-
The Black dude with the spikes. He can sing for sure, and I think he's really being himself.
For the rest, the hostess (Brookes?) is sho' nuff fine, wish she'd wear tighter pants tho--
And Mr. Navarro- Again I respect your successes in music etc,
but seeing an "alternative" guitarist sitting in a throne, being a kind of alternative Simon or Randy or Paula----I don't know, it's kind of out of synch for me....
Best of luck to all involved tho, it is fun, and
ROCK ON DUDES!

The hostess is Brooke Burns...she's been around(E! network, "Wild On __________"(Fill in the Blank), Travel Channel, numerous calenders, etc...I'm trying to recall: Was she ever on one of those ESPN workout shows? If not, she shoulda been!).

Navarro has also been popping up on the tube a lot lately...Celebrity poker, for example.

I really should get cable! Then I could see even more of Brooke Burns... and that wouldn't be a bad thing!

I can't blame Mr. Navarro, or anyone else for that matter, for capitalizing on their fame and taking opportunities for media exposure....The cost of living these days and all!!
I know I would if I could!

I guess he's kind of like the alternative version of Nick and Jessica, then.

I personally never listened all that intensely to INXS- I remember "New Sensation" had a nice feel I thought, and a few of their other things I remember hearing sounded pretty decent.
It will be interesting to see what material they are preparing for their new member, and whether it will sell large and give them a push as a result of this show; or whether ratings etc. cause the whole shebang to just....kinda fade away.

The little bit of playing that I heard them do inside the "Rock Star Mansion", with Mr. Navarro joining in---Wasn't really featured, but the House Band-- got to give it up and enjoy the real "nameless" pros- laying it down and being excellent musicians, no BS or ratings about that aspect!!
