INXS Rock Star Debuts

JimK said:
The hostess is Brooke Burns...she's been around(E! network, "Wild On __________"(Fill in the Blank), Travel Channel, numerous calenders, etc...I'm trying to recall: Was she ever on one of those ESPN workout shows? If not, she shoulda been!).
.

Sorry, good buddy. Her name is Brooke Burke.

This information comes to you from the one who misnamed Dave Navarro Rob Navarro in my first post in this thread.

The gal with dreadlocks is named Jordis Unga and she is very impressive, but I don't see her fronting INXS. Remember the objective of this reality series is to find a replacement for Michael Hutchence (as if he could be replaced.)

The INXS that I know and love would be going in a new direction with Jordis as a frontperson. That is not to say they cannot change direction. But what I'd rather see, as I like Jordis so much, is for her to use this opportunity to launch her own career, do solo work, front her own band and make a real name for herself. I love the quality of her voice. I bet she could make a very listenable CD.

The singer with the punk mohawk is Ty. He, too, is impressive, but again I don't see him as a replacement for Hutchence. He has a very distinct vibe. I'd rather see him front his own band. He has a powerful voice and stage presence. He deserves his own career not piggybacking on INXS.

What I find odd is that I don't want the very best singers to win. I want them to make their own CDs. Go figure.

I'm really pleased several of you are liking Rock Star. It makes American Idol look darned lame in comparison. It is really fun to hear all these rock songs being sung by new voices and faces. The contestant that made his own arrangement of "California Dreaming" breathed whole new life into that tired old song. My congratulations to him.

JO-
NOT Reading my posts, huh? Busted!
I corrected myself in the post immediately before your's...buried at the bottom of Pg. 2, 3 hours ahead of your correction.
;)

I saw "Rob Navarro" & gave you a pass. Did you confuse Rob Thomas + Dave Navarro?

I guess I saw the 'encore' performance of that last night...good stuff.

Nice to see some singers not trying to make it in Nashville.

I look foreward to watching these contestants' singing
careers blossom when the show is over-
-on cruise ships, theme parks, and frat parties
(including the "winner")

Whoa! That's cold..FUNNY as he** but cold!
Probably too true also!

I'm sure the contestants are all digging the exposure, using it to max their careers, embellishing their websites, etc.
Amazing what media offers these days. Singers used to bust their butts working clubs to get their names out there, now 5 million people get a look in 1/2 hour. Wow- I guess the difference may be this-
Paying dues would eliminate the "weak" and lesser talented, un-original entertainers, while honing the skills of those with real chops and originality, so if they do get a chance, they're ready.
Where did they get these contestants? There are some who IMO have some real talent, no doubt, but most of them- they're on the same level as you can see and hear at any local bar- a few seem to me to be on "The Wedding Singer"
level, only dressed to be hip, with tats and piercings....

Surreal- Last night, they showed group shot, with the remaining contestants embracing....each one made up to the nines, lookin' fly, real "rockstars"...one guy is a Jagger wanna-be, another an angry Punk star complete with scowls, and the women----working it! I dunno- all this on network TV!!!!
And Mr. Navarro, all decked out, very styling, I admit. but that throne!! A bit much for me.

Hey- I'M gonna keep watching- They got me hooked!
I wonder how the show is doing in the ratings?
That is the question!

I'm digging this show, 'cause to me it is surreal.

IMHO

C'mon Man, lighten up!

Something like this comes on TV, taking "Reality TV" where it's not been before ("Let's find a replacement singer for a famous rock band...") you gotta talk about it! It's"Miscellaneous" here, remember? Plenty of threads for talking about Locrian Modes, or "which amp is better, Walter Woods or Behringer?" you know stuff like that!

I think it's fascinating on a lot of levels myself-
Some of them certainly not in the way the show's creators have in mind, but I'm watching it and that's what counts to them.
Maybe they're smarter than we think... The ratings will tell in the end.

If nothing else, I do enjoy hearing the House Band, they are real on-the-job professionals, and it's always nice to hear studio- level players do their thing on TV live.
Some of the contestants certainly have skillz too, so let the games continue. It's all fun.

If I want to get SERIOUS, I put some Coltrane on, or Wayne Shorter, whatever.
This is entertainment!

I think we agree...if my reading comprehension is up to snuff.
There is much to be said for "paying dues" in the traditional way (endless bar gigs, wedding gigs, cruise gigs, recording demos, going from band to band, touring, touring, touring), but I have to wonder how many really talented folks out there have paid dues for years and still never get "discovered".

I believe that many gifted and worthy entertainers never become name acts, no matter how hard they try. Luck still plays a huge part, hence a post I wrote earlier in another thread, "Luck is preparedness meeting opportunity." But sadly, for all too many, the luck part never comes.

That's why I don't resent entertainers who do try their luck on shows such as Rock Star, because if they can get exposure this way, why not? The weakest acts don't win anyway. Most of the time, it isn't raw talent that wins, but ones who have already done the dues paying part without any significant recognition from their efforts. Bo Bice, who finished second on "American Idol" is just such a performer.

Anyway, I'm really enjoying Rock Star if for no other reason than hearing all the rock songs and the excellent backing band. I'm also fascinated by the reactions of INXS band members as they watch the various performers. They really respond to the sexiest girls, but I wonder if they really want such singers to front their band or they just enjoy the sexy girls.

I'm with you there. I think a few of 'em could and would do better on their own if given the chance. Taking that further, I also wonder how many of them actually want to front INXS. Seems like that could be a key factor as the show progresses.

I don't think the show's done enough to hook me, but that guy's arrangement was pretty cool, I thought. I'm not really a fan per se of INXS or of Classic Rawk, but I expect to tune in sporadically. My wife digs the show, and there's precious little weekday network programming that I can stomach, so it's nice to sit down and share some quality blankness together.

Boplicity, you make a very valid point-
I recently did a string of gigs in the South-
Lousiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia South Carolina-
(I'm from Los Angeles). Except for a brief swing thru Tampa, FLA, and airport stopovers in Atlanta & Memphis, which don't count- I'd never spent any time there.
THE MUSIC!!! WOW!
I heard stuff on AM radio, that was so IN-THE-POCKET it floored me!! R&B and Blues that was better than anything I'd heard- from performers who do the "chitlin' circuit" and although may achieve recognition in that area, never break through nationally Too Bad! - Anyone out there hear of Tyrone Davis doing "Hot Spot" ?? I hadn't and OH, man...... Many others too.

As related to the thread, the contestants on "RockStar" are getting exposure to millions of viewers. Only time will tell if they have what it takes to achieve fame---You can ram something down the public's throat so to speak, but you can't make it last- Take Justin Guarini (sp?) from American Idol's 1st season- He was in the news constantly, haven't heard much from him, tho I suppose he can capitolize on his air-time for years to come. Same with some or all of these contestants.
I guess it remains to be seen what will happen with INXS and their new frontperson as a result of all this "drama".

Unreal!

ROTFLMAO!!!

 Now that's funny!
Twisted, yes, irreverent, yes,
but, Man, that is Funny!

....You're probably right about the new CD's ultimate fate, too.Somehow, it just doesn't have the next "Sgt. Pepper" vibe to it, does it?

on another note it always amazing to me that the general public supports the winners of these show's.when AI started i thought that there was no way that people would get behind the winners or runners up because they were being created in front of your eyes.now i might be wrong but i think every winner on AI has went at least plat if not more, and that's suprising to me at least because kelly clarkson, rubeun studdered, and fantasia barrino may not of got major lable deals without the show, not that they shouldn't but they may not of because of image and marketing issues.

I never watched any American Idol episodes, and never wanted to either. I think the name alone was pretentious for what was essentially a karaoke competition.

Rockstar INXS is also a singers' competition, but the band and rock n' roll elements make it more interesting, IMHO.

Bob-
Agree 100%.

Last night's 30-minute episode was more like a 'behind-the-scenes' show...each contestant was selecting 'their song' from what was posted on a bullentin board.
Two girls wanted "Paranoid"...one caved & took the song nobody wanted- "The One I Love"(REM).

It also looked like each was given a Les Paul &/or an acoustic guitar. The Black Crowes' wannabe belted out "Sweet Home Alabama"...pretty lame, IMO.

A designer also came in to help them with 'their look'. A few of them donned a 'uniform'. Again, lame. If too much thought goes into it('a look'), it's probably BS. Just one man's opinion.
;)

The best part of the show was the actual rehearsing of the song with the band.

So far, the only one of the American Idols that works for me is Kelly Clarkson. She has a good enough voice that I actually would listen to her on purpose. I can't love the songs I've heard on her CD, but that isn't about the singing, so much. It's about the material. Crap through great pipes is still crap. Ask any plumber.

None of the other 'idol's have impressed me. I hoped Reuben would, but I'm still waiting.

I think that even tho "American Idol" could be described as karaoke, and is saccharine, there has been some talent on the show- All of the finalists have had vocal chops-Clay, Kelly, etc CAN sing, even if they're middle of the road- Ruben has some real pipes, and let me say, I would LOVE to haveFantasia front an R&B project in which I played bass-
She is a great performer.

"Rock Star" is another story altogether. It's getting more and more surreal, getting into the "dramas" and conflicts of the contestants- "Big Brother, R'nR"--might as well add some "Fear Factor" elements as well!
The "style" segment had me rolling on the floor- especially the INXS drummer, who I thought looked very lame in his, uh, sportcoat. Maybe I'm just jealous that I don't warrant a stylist.
I had a great deal of respect for the girl with the 'dreads, who stated that it was bogus. Right on! The others.....ah man!
It's a soap!
And wow---- "Guys, Look! GIBSON Guitars! A real Les Paul!"
I can hear players all over the country rolling with laughter at that bit of promotion.
... I hope.

The only reality bite was the band segment. It is unique on TV to get a glimpse of real behind-the-glitter PLAYERS do their thing. The House Band sure has skillz.

I've got to keep watching, if for no other reason than to glean from Dave Navarro's clinics on Rock-star dressing, etc.
It's getting better and better.
