iOS, iPhone, iPad and music 101

It was mentioned that in the other bass iOS thread that people were getting lost a bit....and we should "diversify" so just to let others know that there is a "b15 sim in iOS" related thread we had started that deals mostly with tones an settings and clips from duke and rip and myself and others of course........

The Official Virtual AMPEG Portaflex Club

We should maybe start other iOS based threads to sort out some of the other major topics.
Like the 101 thread is very helpful to those needing just starting out users to iOS type questions to be answered.

The only problem with that is that so much info is scattered over a few threads. We'd almost need a subforum of our own to make info easy to find.

I've finally purchased AudioBus, Loopy and MTDAW - a bit confused with how they all relate. I thought I was paying attention to the various discussions of what apps to load first, what needs to be recorded then copied and pasted into what app, then looped, recorded again...etc. ;) I know much of this is buried in these threads--and I'll do my research--but if we want another specific thread it'd be nice to have a concise, specific place to document "instructions" for using these various apps together, and how they can be picky about things.

For examples, do we choose the Mic Input as the source in AudioBus when wanting to use JamUp and record in MTDAW, or JamUp as the effects source in the middle? Why or why not? Why does the JamUp option in AudioBus's effects selection seem to disappear on occasion, yet seems to be working in the background (sometimes)? In general, how much does Loopy come into play here? Is everything put into Loopy then played and recorded in MTD, with the bass live, or is that recorded separately and everything put together, etc.

I've got some more learnin' to do.

You choose the mic input any time you're holding your bass. That's the easiest way to get you started.

Open Audiobus first. From there you can make the connections. To record your bass, pick mic input (for the Jam), then in the effect slot pick Jamup, output to MTDAW.

Now if youre recording, say, Sunrizer (synth), and you want to run it into Jamup before recording, pick Sunrizer as the input, Jamup as effects, MTDAW as output.

Arm a track in MTDAW (don't forget to pick your source from the same pop-up) and you're ready to record.

Now if you get some weird glitches or low signals (Audiobus is still in its first version, it's not totally perfect, just close :) ), close everything and open Audobus. Then minimize it an open the other apps. Then make the connection in Audiobus.

That should get you started. Make sure you explore MTDAW. It looks very simple, but there's lots of fun stuff if you look for it.

Now if you want to record into Loopy, then record your composition into MTDAW to add other stuff, it's a few more steps.

In Audiobus, pick Mic input as the input, then Jamup as effects, and Loopy as output. Record your stuff.

Now, to transfer to MTDAW, close all connections in Audiobus.

Pick Loopy as input, Jamup as effects (if you'd like to add some effects to what you created), then MTDAW as the output.

Inside MTDAW, pick Loopy as your source.

Now, there a few ways you can transfer your creation in Loopy to MTDAW. If you want to "play" your loops live into MTDAW, minimize the recorder and open Loopy. On the side Audiobus tab you can control MTDAW while activated and deactivating your loops.

Don't forget to always pick your source in MTDAW. If you don't, MTDAW always picks the uneffected mic input.

Only three slots. Not really a need for much more. You can have more than one thing going in each slot, as long as your iOS device can keep up.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I could see a use for being able to pass data through several effects apps in series. If you put multiple apps in a slot, it's essentially in parallel, isn't it?

Now, if you want to import a drum loop to use in MTDAW, here's what I do.

Build the loop in DM1, then use Audiocopy/paste to export to Loopy. Then import it in Loopy (it'll be on the clipboard, you'll have to do it manually), and you're good to go.

Since DM1 isn't Audiobus compatible, you gotta think outside the box a little!!

hey resident experts... I finally got around to building a track with iKaossilator which I recorded into MTDAW. Then laid down a bass track into MTDAW using JamUp. Everything worked fine.

Here is the problem. I've made multiple attempts at uploading this to Soundcloud and every time I've tried, the bass track is dropped on the mixdown that MTDAW does prior to building the M4A file for upload. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, or what is happening?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that's your problem.

I had the EXACT problem when I was using Irig. Lower volume in Loopy and in MTDAW. No amount of tweaking fixed it. The signal is so low that it doesn't even show on the meters at all.

You'll be able to hear it in headphones, and that makes it worse because you'll be thinking everything is fine. It's not.

My Jam showed up yesterday. As soon as I plugged it in, my bass was back!!

I'm sorry I can't offer a fix. I wasn't able to find one, other than ****-canning the Irig.

That's odd because its mixed fine when I play back from within MTDAW  I will try recording with mac and Garageband and see what happens. Can't all be the iRigs fault. Gotta have something to do with MTDAW, don't ya think? sigh... guess I'll give up on trying to record anything for now if that truly is the problem.

I was just reading your post again. Are you saying when you recorded into MTDAW that you didn't see a waveform or any VU meter response on the bass track when you played back? That is not my problem if that is what happened to you. I have a waveform, albeit a bit lower than the iKaoss track but it's definitely there and the VU meter on the track runs up to about 75% during playback.
