iOS, iPhone, iPad and music 101

Quoted together because I'm going to bookmark this post and print it out. :bassist:

You choose the mic input any time you're holding your bass. That's the easiest way to get you started.

Open Audiobus first. From there you can make the connections. To record your bass, pick mic input (for the Jam), then in the effect slot pick Jamup, output to MTDAW.

Now if youre recording, say, Sunrizer (synth), and you want to run it into Jamup before recording, pick Sunrizer as the input, Jamup as effects, MTDAW as output.

Arm a track in MTDAW (don't forget to pick your source from the same pop-up) and you're ready to record.

Now if you get some weird glitches or low signals (Audiobus is still in its first version, it's not totally perfect, just close :) ), close everything and open Audobus. Then minimize it an open the other apps. Then make the connection in Audiobus.

That should get you started. Make sure you explore MTDAW. It looks very simple, but there's lots of fun stuff if you look for it.

Now if you want to record into Loopy, then record your composition into MTDAW to add other stuff, it's a few more steps.

In Audiobus, pick Mic input as the input, then Jamup as effects, and Loopy as output. Record your stuff.

Now, to transfer to MTDAW, close all connections in Audiobus.

Pick Loopy as input, Jamup as effects (if you'd like to add some effects to what you created), then MTDAW as the output.

Inside MTDAW, pick Loopy as your source.

Now, there a few ways you can transfer your creation in Loopy to MTDAW. If you want to "play" your loops live into MTDAW, minimize the recorder and open Loopy. On the side Audiobus tab you can control MTDAW while activated and deactivating your loops.

Don't forget to always pick your source in MTDAW. If you don't, MTDAW always picks the uneffected mic input.

Now, if you want to import a drum loop to use in MTDAW, here's what I do.

Build the loop in DM1, then use Audiocopy/paste to export to Loopy. Then import it in Loopy (it'll be on the clipboard, you'll have to do it manually), and you're good to go.

Since DM1 isn't Audiobus compatible, you gotta think outside the box a little!!

Bloody awesome. Thanks, brother.

Yeah the waveform is visible, but just by looking at it you'll see that it's gonna be a problem. Way too low of a level.

I don't know. I emailed HarmonicDog support to see what they say. I'm not saying this wasn't a problem for you but the waveform is plenty large enough and the bass sits in the mix perfectly if I drop the iKaosslitor track to about -3DB. If I plug the ipad into my powered Mackie srm150 via the line out the bass line is there and mixed in properly. When I listen to the M4A file, it's completely missing on mixdown like it was never even there.

Just out of curiousity, is your bass active or passive that you had trouble with. My bass is active and has a hot signal.

I'm not trying to say you're wrong but I just can't wrap my head around how the bass line is clearly there and after mixdown it has been completely removed. I'll post what the solution ends up being, even if it ends up being you're dead right and I need to pulverize my iRig and send it back to IK :bassist::bassist::bassist::bassist::bassist:

Not that I have the money now, but I just missed an eBay sale where a JAM went for $63.

My bass is passive but everything else you've experienced is identical. The bass is there when you play it back but gone at mixdown. As long as the Irig is plugged in, everything is fine. Until you mixdown or upload the tracks.
Take a look at the five or so uploads of mine on Soundcloud. Bass is missing.

I'm willing to bet my Irig on it.

Wow, I am scratching my head but out of the blue my bass line is back in the mix... wait, I just figure it out and this is messed up.

So, I always use my Mackie SRM150 monitor for listening to music from my Laptop. It's like a small single PA speaker. It has 3 channels, one of which has STEREO RCA inputs. I run a cable (1/8" male to stereo RCA ) from my mac to the Mackie. I just remembered that I complained I couldn't play my bass through the mackie and when someone from Positive Grid got back to me they told me to unplug one of the RCA plugs. It worked and I couldn't figure out why but I didn't care. Well it turns out that pulling one of those plugs from the stereo input did the trick.

SO, my bass line is in there and I'm still wondering why the hell the output of JamUp can't be heard with my setup but that is a discussion for some other thread I suppose.

hey resident experts... I finally got around to building a track with iKaossilator which I recorded into MTDAW. Then laid down a bass track into MTDAW using JamUp. Everything worked fine.

Here is the problem. I've made multiple attempts at uploading this to Soundcloud and every time I've tried, the bass track is dropped on the mixdown that MTDAW does prior to building the M4A file for upload. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, or what is happening?

Do you have different bitrate etc on each track?

No idea but I figured it out. The speaker I use with my Mac is a mono Mackie powered monitor but it has a channel with a stereo input. The output of JamUp, whether directly from the app or as recorded into another app, ( i.e. MTDAW ) cannot be heard if I connect both L/R RCA jacks into the Mackie. I have to pull one of them. No idea why but that's the deal with why I couldn't hear the bass. It was mixed in and was there the whole time.

I wonder......is the left and right channel 180* out of phase of each other

Other than the horrible bass tone you get, is there any special reason why some are not using Garageband to record your tracks?
I mean, the keyboards, synths, voices and especially the drums are great. The drums sound way more realistic than all the other beat simulators I have tried.

I think the main knock against GB is the complete lack of support for bass guitar and the lack of support for audiobus which would allow us to use JU, AT OR AK for recording bass. You are right that it has all the other aspects of recording done really well. Using the smart instruments is a very easy to understand experience and thy sound great

Rip, you should try it. It's a steal at $5.
