iPhone 5 ... anyone?

Just a note of caution. Anyone with Verizon that has a grandfathered unlimited data plan -if you accept a phone upgrade after Jan 1, 2013 you loose the unlimited data plan.
With work we have two family plans with 5 phones on each. We're heavy data users and loosing the unlimited plan will cost us quite a bit more per month. We were told the only way to upgrade and keep our existing plan is to pay full price on new phones.

Yeah, that part sucks. It actually went into effect prior to 1/1/13. I used my upgrade in early December. Luckily, my data usage was no where near 2GB, so I was able to go with that plan without it effecting my usage.

I ummed and aahed about defecting from Apple since I wasn't a massive fan of the iPhone 5. So, last week, I had a phone call from my carrier offering me a free upgrade, so I asked them to send me a Galaxy S3.

And...

I'm sending it back tomorrow.

The screen is to die for, and Android has come a long way. But, the battery life was woeful - it didn't even last a whole day, with GPS, wi-fi and Bluetooth all turned off and Power Save mode turned on, and with only about 10 minutes of use. Also, various apps seemed to keep crashing - even the big, widely-used ones like Chrome, Twitter and Facebook.

Also, the software Samsung supplies for syncing doesn't bring in iTunes playlists on the Mac (I had to get another piece of software to do that, and, even then, I had to mess with it a lot to even recognise that the phone was connected).

Basically the iPhone was a lot less hassle, lasted longer and didn't crash as often. So I'm keeping it until Apple bring out something that impresses me more than the iPhone 5 did.

Something was wrong with your GS3 then. I never shut off GPS, and can stream over 4 g for about 7 hours before I need to charge.

Seriously, if I were more invested in Apple ( I only have an iPad), I would've gone for the iPhone 5. I found that the GS3 was more of what I needed, plus I like the screen real estate.

I have heard a lot of people say things like this. Honestly, I really want to check out BlackBerry 10; it looks really nice. Windows 8 mobile also looks cool, but it would have to be revolutionary to get to me make the switch from my iPhone 5.

It's like with anything else, everyone has a preference. What works for me might not work for you.

I had upgraded to the 5 from a 3GS and it was a huge leap. If you have a 4, I'd look into moving up. The differences are really nice, better screen, LTE, lighter, better everything. I also like the form factor better. It's a beautiful piece of kit.

If you have a 4S, then I would pass and wait for the next thing, which is inevitable, unless the extra screen real estate or something else is a must have feature.

I started off jailbreaking to use the iPhone on TMobile, then AT&T prepaid but it got to be more hassle than its worth for me. I don't want to mess with it, I just want to use it so I was in a good place to leave that behind when I moved to the 5. That is also a consideration.

that's where i'm at, i got a 4S and am not keen on the 5, mostly due to the fact that it's bigger; screen or no screen, i can't help but think steve jobs would not have been happy with a new phone that was bigger than the old one, that is not an improvement.

when they get the bigger screen on the same size phone, that would have been the real breakthrough.

I went from a Droid X to the 5.

Overall, I like the phone better. But...there are a lot of little things that annoy the crap out of me. Things that Android devices have had for years and Apple still doesn't. It makes all of the Apple fanboi crap even funnier to me.

Android has Swype for text input. It's fantastic. Apple has nothing like it, just a standard keyboard. Coming from Swype, using the iPhone makes text input mind numbing. Especially anything more than a few words.

yea, i've heard that whole "the difference between apple and android is apple is point, android is touch" stuff. Frankly I rather not be counted for every key stroke I make on the screen, as I've discovered when it comes to pointing specifically at things, I just have big clumbsy sausage fingers that often need to go back for a second hack at it to get things the way I'm accustomed.

To be fair, even though I feel Android is superior, the Apple touch keyboard is really excellent. Much better, and much more accurate than Android touch keyboard. But Android has Swype, so......
Agreed. Having come from an iPhone, the Android keyboard always felt inferior to me.

There *is* a new keyboard out though that's pretty badass. It's called Kii. It's based on JB and is beyond customizable in every way shape and form, has the custom text option, which the iPhone does not, and also utilizes its own version of Swype that seems to work very well thus far.

It's currently in beta and therefore free. For any of you on Android, try it out!

* I am not affiliated with Kii in any way. i just think it's a great keyboard!
