I would say that your reverb is unique as is tbh. I've still yet to find a reverb that sounds like it does and is usable at 100% verb and no dry signal. It was a staple sound of mine that I've never been able to find again since. Very frustrating to be honest...still kicking myself for moving it along all those years ago.
@2:17 of the first tune is my using the Nimbus with distortion to feed back and get this very specific sound....I really need a Nimbus again!!

I always enjoy seeing Iron Ether pedal runs. I would second (third, fourth?) a Divaricator run (and a Dubterrograph and Nimbus SE run too).

While this may be controversial, I actually thought the tracking on my Dubterranea was better than on my Subterranea, although looking at recent comments that may be because I play mostly low notes and very close to the neck when I use it. I last A/Bed them using a fretless jazz with flats and preferred the tone and tracking of the Dubterranea, with the Dubterranea sounding cleaner (albeit with a little hair) and the Subterranea a bit dirtier (with a suggestion of bit-crushing). That may likely be user error though or me listening with my eyes as the paint job is one of the nicest of any Iron Ether pedal in my opinion. In either case, it’s kind of relative because both are awesome and have their uses, and I’m keen to try any pedal @Taylor Livingston puts together that I haven’t tried yet.

edit: congratulations Taylor on the TB anniversary! A couple of weeks back I found a useful post about Justin Chancellor’s Wal setup from 2003 and was surprised to see your name as author. Helpful post, as always!

I always thought the tracking and sound on my Dubterranea was great. But then again I don't have a ton of experience with octave pedals. I upgraded from an OC-3 to the DubT and it felt like quite the upgrade.

Just wanted to share some more Dubterrranea love.

I missed out on @Erithon's SubT that @sloppy_phil picked up due to timing circumstances , but now keeping an eye out for another one since I (finally) just got paid for a freelance job. But I'll pass on $600, which seems a little gouge-y for one in "great condition" that looks like it's maybe been abused a bit.

I'll keep waiting, and I'm also on the list for a Dubterranea.

FWIW, looking at the "sold listings" from the seller of the SubT, they've sold two in the past at $465 and $435, and the listing does say "open to making a deal".. maybe worth it to at least shoot them an offer.

What are the differences between the 5 & 6 knob Xerograph Deluxes? I know the 6 knob has the addition of the Expression knob & a dedicated stomp to activate the envelope... does that mean the 5 knob is always in envelope effect?

Probably as it only has one stomp button as well, envelope would be on always (as any other filter pedal), looks to still have a exp though. Side jacks too.. ich.

I honestly want to try a 3 knob XD sometime, might honestly fit me better.

IIRC, on the 5 knob, it’s always envelope unless/until the EXP has something plugged into it. The EXP In also acts as the switch between env and expression-controlled.

I have the 5 knob XD. The Expression pedal just changes the Frequency Knob on the fly. Plug in the expression, and now it overrides the Frequency knob. It's still an autowah, no manual sweep, but now you can change the frequency on the fly. It's a very narrow sweep range, but it works. If you got something like the EHX CNTL Knob pedal, you could toggle between 2 different frequency "favorites" and not a bad way to swap between settings.

I've thought about getting one, but scored a 6 knob on the last drop. Probably going to keep both, one set for classic wah and another set for synth.

I know it's a bit of a quirky one-trick pony, but I think it makes for a tight little combo with the SubT, and as a filter it suits my needs perfectly. I want a set-and-forget type filter, and love vintage tones in the vein of Bootsy etc.

I'm going away with my reggae band, so working on dub-friendly tones here, and messed about on some classic reggae bass lines for the little test. Thought I'd share with some fellow noise-freaks

Just to clear this up: on both versions, the Frequency knob and expression pedal are always active, and they add together with the envelope democratically (any one can sweep nearly the full frequency range on its own, and the cutoff frequency is set by the addition of all three).

The expression pedal is never switched off (if you wanted to switch it "off", just set the expression pedal heel down - that will be the same as if it wasn't connected). The reason you'd want to have the expression pedal and envelope active together is that you can do unique and interesting things by combining them.

The Frequency knob doesn't get overridden, they work together. So you can set the bottom of the sweep/minimum frequency with the Freq knob and on the newer version (6 knob) you can set the maximum frequency with the Exp knob. If you're only getting a narrow sweep range, I'll be happy to help troubleshoot, but I'm guessing it's because the Freq knob on the pedal is set high.

To answer the original question, the 5-knob version is the original, released in 2011. The 6-knob version is the redesign, released in 2016.

-knob ranges reconfigured to make it a lot less fiddly to dial in the sounds you want
-the exp switch turns the envelope off (but keeps the expression pedal active!) so you can switch to a deep dubby sound without auto-wah, and back without losing the position of your Sensitivity knob

Thanks for the clarification, Taylor. This makes sense. I always have my expression pedal plugged in & just have it set heel down if I want yo rely on the envelope to auto trigger... that was actually what I was wanting to know, if the original XD operated the same way seeing as it doesn't have a dedicated footswitch to turn the envelope on/off.
