Notwithstanding the douchery, I gave the Nimbus a spin this evening and its defintely exactly what I was looking for. Basically when I asked Taylor about a reverb my plan was a simple reverb that worked well on bass. Didn't need any bells and whistles, the main requirement was that it didn't get too muddy. Taylor has delivered this perfectly.
This pedal kills the Dr Scientist in terms of bass friendliness. It doesn't have all the different verbs and modes that the Dr Scientist has, but what it does have is the features that you want for bass - a clean blend, a reverb blend, room size and Taylor's magic filter control. If you want bells and whistles this isn't the pedal for you. I'd recommend looking at the Strymon Blue Sky, but in terms of giving you a great bass reverb tone that isn't muddied, this is every bit as good as the Strymon and I think in a couple of respects its better. The use of the two blends gives you a vast array of reverb tones from one a hair of reverb to almost no clean and totally loud reverb that gives very dramatic soundscapes (with a big room setting). It didn't take long to work out how the controls interacted and be able to dial in exactly the type of verb setting I was looking for.
The room control has a lot of range, the biggest settings really are like playing in a cathedral, and the smallest settings are like a small room, but the blend controls mean that you can vary them to make the small room sound even smaller or the cathedral sound even bigger. The filter works well to, its especially good for chords as it reduces the muddiness without affect the overtones so if you play an open E you still get verb on the overtones without the fundamental becoming muddied.
In some ways this might be an unusual pedal for Iron Ether because it is so "simple", but don't let the simplicity fool you, this pedal is a versatile verb. I am very, very happy with this. I think its the reverb I have been looking for. Its a good size footprint and it works like magic on bass. Honestly, this is another A+ effort from Taylor!
