Iron Ether Subterranea

you know, I kind of dropped it because of not wanting to argue with a point well made, but ...
AN I.E. COMPRESSOR, discussion II

(no they aren't working on one, I am just dreaming)

I kind of distracted myself with the idea of the awesomeness of a squashed sub-T, but I think the more useful point I could have made was for something that maybe should no longer be called a compressor

Imagine it as more of a synthesis EG shaper,
an A D S R machine
Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release, for those who don't know.

BECAUSE HERE IS WHERE MAKING YOUR BASS A SYNTH FALLS SHORT:

the 'envelope' of a stringed instrument is always one shape:
Big attack spike with a quick decay.

You cannot PUSH through notes like horn players, and you cannot naturally create a delayed attack, or a slower 'decay' than your physical bass allows.

So forget sustain if the buzzword for bad compressors turn you off, a thousand compressors squash and sustain, sure. but...

What if I.E. allowed us to finally break free of this inescapable 'volume' shape of our stringed sound-tools?!?!

You could sound like an actual dubby synth, or you can have PUNCHY kick drum style peak-and-dips. FAT DEEP creep ins. That's what makes the character of any good synth sound- the envelope, the attack. The waveform is taken care of with the Sub-T and Oxide, the filtering is nailed by the Xero-s, the modulation, etc etc! Why not finish the gamut and change the game of live bass guitar forever!

Food for thought, but if this somehow happened, it would be a GIGANTIC game changer.

Think about it- Fuzz into filter as a synth? your note still dies away with time. Digitech bass synth wah? note still decaying. Markbass? Decaying. The subterranea into a xero? SUPER badass, and I admittedly do not have any issues regarding sustain with the Sub T (seriously, so badass) BUT one day or another... the note will die off. The Sub t does a remarkable job of somehow supplying level-stable sounds (perhaps there is compression in one form or another within the SubT itself)

Just saying, if I ever see an announcement for the "Iron Ether ASDR Machine" I am buying it immediately

Ehx freeze maybe? I know it's not the same but could be a usable hack for the time being for that keyboard style infinite sustain

I think this is part of the reason I'm never quite happy enough with an envelope filter, the envelope that drives them is very often the un modified (or just a bit modified) envelope of the bass. The characteristic sounds of analogue synths are strongly related to two things (beyond the oscillators themselves), envelope control (either ADSR or AR/AD) over both volume and filter, often separate envelopes for each.

Something that moves us bassists in that direction would be really cool, but be prepared for a lot more knobs if it happens :) .

I've been looking for a bass guitar ADSR pedal for a while. Waaaay harder to do than to discuss though.

Yeah, I'm sure ... You not only have to accommodate the programmed ADSR envelope, but also any bass player is going to want it to be touch sensitive as with real strings.

And ... the ideal sound source, Oscillators at a fixed level, will not carry the trigger information from the original input (bass). So unless this is carefully integrated into one pedal, you're either looking at separate jack sockets for sound and trigger (Agent 00Funk and Brown dog combo implemented this) or a loop from the envelope pedal (such as wonderlove). Even that explanation is a simplification.

No doubt- integrating an envelope algorithm that can follow peaks around, work with bass, fuzz and the subT, AND sound natural/usable...

pretty tall order

so good.

lol. i'm not talking poo about your guitarists, i'm sure they're hellza good. it just makes me laugh when people say guitar is harder because CHORDS when there's songs that the guitar player is skanking over the same few chords throughout and the bass player is busting his ASS with runs filled lines.

like. um. that.

MEOW.

Oh hell yeah behndy that's what I'm talkin bout!!

Thanks for the kind words, guys!

I love this band because I get to seriously lay it down and represent. Everyone gets their moment (yeah, the guitarist close to me in the video is a BEAST when he gets down), but the bass just funks the whole time. They also love it when i use pedals, especially the subT and Xero combo. In the cover bands i play with, it is exactly the opposite. The guitarist gets to play all the cool solos and stuff and I get to lay on the eighth notes. Still fun just different.

OK guys, good news.

We listened to your feedback about the Subterranea and have not only fixed the noise issue but have come up with a few other upgrades in the process. All Subterraneas shipped from September 2013 onward will come equipped with all these upgrades as standard. There's no extra charge, it's not a separate version or anything.

If you have a Subterranea that was shipped prior to September 2013, and you want to get the upgrades, please contact me at [email protected] to get details on how to get yours upgraded. The upgrade is free and only adds to what the pedal can do.

The upgrade includes:
- fixed the noise bleed/chatter issue
- the filter control is now more responsive, with more harmonics available at the high end of the control.
- deeper fundamental on the clean octave.
- more reasonable volume levels (previously the pedal was way too darn loud).

I think that covers it, feel free to ask any questions about this here or by email.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Taylor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

will be ordering another one soon!
