Iron Ether Subterranea

I know that it doesn't apply universally, since everybody has their own preferences, but I did some Octaver soul-searching this weekend.

Most important factors: sound (of course), size (Pedalboard space is always tight) and, of course, features.

So I had the OC-2, the SubT and the new 3leaf Octabvre to play around with.

First off, I have to say that they are all great pedals in their own right (and when it comes to just the octave-funtion, they have a lot in common)

But I really ended up realizing how much I love that SubT and of the three it's the pedal I'm going to keep (The whole thing is also part of me taking stock for the end of the year and getting rid of stuff I really don't use that often or only at home).

Sound-wise for the sub-octave I still like the OC-2 the most (it probably also depends on the bass you're playing and in a full-band mix it probably won'T make much of a difference). While the two others are close, the OC-2 to me still has a unique kind of focus and compactness. The SubT has more artifacts and grittiness going on (but it also has the nice filter-knob which which you can make some beautiful synth-noises).

The Octabvre looks gorgeous and sounds awesome, but it's too big for my board and I don't really desperately need the switch for soloing the sub-octave.

And: Besides being a very nice Octaver, the SubT has all those other nice voices and combinations and stacks so nicely with Filters and Phasers. Space-wise, it's also the smallest of the bunch.

So...just wanted to mention that after really just having used it in a rather utilitarian way for the last couple months (meaning: two settings for two songs we play), it's functionality has blown me away, while I was playing around with it at home.

Soooo, does that mean that the classifieds will see its first Octabvre?

Anyhow, great writeup. I've been really digging my SubT lately. That, combined with space constraints and perhaps funds constraints too, has kept me from already buying an Octabvre. Though, that Sub switch looks like something I'd really like.

Nope. :)

I ordered the Octabvre knowing that I could return it within the first 14 days (and because I simply wanted to check out Spencer's new offering. The You're Doom and the Proton are huge favorites of mine. I also tried to stress that I think it's a very good pedal…also looks-wise, but too huge for something that I dont use thaaat often.)

Anyone out there using the trio of SubT, Xero DLX and Oxide? Thoughts? Clips?

I've been getting so much crunch out of my SubT that I'm thinking I might not even need a fuzz on my board, which would give me space for an entirely different thing. So many toys to choose from...

I've moved my Oxide off my board for the moment. The SubT is bright enough for what I need - lots of harmonics to be filtered by a Xero Deluxe. It's not quite as tightly gated as the Oxide.

What I love about the SubT is that it follows my playing volume so it's much more responsive than the Oxide, which squashes everything flat. Sometimes that's nice, but normally for live playing it's tricky to set up. I'll hang onto the Oxide for a bit though...
