Is a GeddyLee Jazz suitable for slapping?

im thinkin about trying out the aguilar outboard pedal preamp just for kicks to see how it is, or wire up a bypass switch on some sort of rack mount ( if they dont already have one )

I agree, I was just saying.

I leave the EQ settings on my amp flat & use th onboard. I've installed a Sadowsky preamp & pickups on my Geddy.

Everybody changed pups on the Geddy Lee, but, you got to know the sound is already really awesome with the stocks...
There are no pups problems on the Geddy Lee.
The biggest problem is the tuners!!! they're weak!!! A theft!!!! even or worse than on a cheap fender copy...
I changed them to Schaller, they work great. And now the bass stays in tune for days

Well, I thought the stock pups were OK, but not great.

You're right about the tuners, I put hipshots on right away.

-The 1st Geddy I owned, I left it stock & it was great.

-The 2nd Geddy I owned, I switched to BassLine Classic JAzz (I think) just because I had them. No big improvement but sounded a little better. Changed the keys to HipShots cause I had that set laying around. Later switched the p/u's to Sadowsky cause I was tired of the hum when I did't have the p/u at the same level.

-The 3rd & current Geddy I own, I bought from PMKelly in Parts. 1st the neck only, then the body with the bridge & neck plate so I had to build it back up from scratch. It currently has the Sadowsky p/u & preamp, Schaller Keys, & B/W/B p/g tuned BEAD.

Personally, I didn't like the original tuning keys eiter but once the bass was tuned up, it never went out of tune.

hmmmm, sounds like kubicki-itis...active/passive pups and preamp....2 active modes and 3 passive....i used to think that slapping sounded bad on passive basses, until i "really" played a jazz and got my kubicki, with the kubicki you can really have a larry graham slap sound...passive slapping souds great when you balance the pickups neck to bridge 90-10....but really, ill choose a kuibcki over anything for any type of bass playing

On mine it was awful, especially during gigs in bars, with the warmth of the room, I had to retune the bass after each song.
With the Schaller, I just give a look to the tuner to see if everything's ok, and it is.
I was told by a local luthier the Hipshot were better, but they were more expensive here in France.
Anyway, this bass is great.

I've got a question: As I did, GeddyL owners often change pups whereas they're supposed to be the same as US series.
Are the pickups TRULY the same as the pups used on US series or are they made in the US with a lower quality( Export series or so...)???

I have a GL Jazz and can say 'Yes, it is'.

The stock config will give you a decent sound, but a GL Jazz with Dimarzio UltraJazz pickups has a KILLER slap sound.

David, where is the best place to get the Dimarzio's? Do you know of an online source? I might want to throw a set in my GL.

Yes, a Geddy Lee has a great slap tone. Mine has the stock pickups, and it kills! I just wish it was a five string.

So, buy a Geddy, slap some DR Loriders on there, and start thumping!

Even if Geddy Lee isn't known for being terribly funky, his signature Fender Jazz is still a FENDER JAZZ. Its hard not to get funky playing that bass. I thought the pickups where fine and the neck was a dream. Until this thread, the only negative critique I've ever heard about the Ged axe is the tunners (a fairly easy fix, IMHO).

My Geddy seems perfect.

Great tone out of the stock pickups, perfect(and I mean perfect) neck, and no problems from anything else on the bass.

Damn worth the price at $630.

And the tuners aren't all that bad. Mine stays in tune.

I do wish that I could get a little lower action but it's not that bad.
