Really? I think there are better deals out there. We just don't see them enough to notice them all because they really ARE gone in an hour. I know I did better than that in 2009 on a new 4003.

I would say the mean value for the price of a new 4003 right now is around $1650, based on my own personal research. A used one should be a couple hundred cheaper at least. I laugh at all of the crazy eBay auctions asking $2,000 for a new (but not really new) Ric.

It's a relatively rare color.

Seller also has a "Make An Offer" option. There's your chance to do even better than $1500.00.

If I didn't already own a white one, I'd be all over this.

Honestly, no. They aren't worth the money. And I've owned....7 of them over the last 30 years. BUT...if you WANT one, they ARE worth the money. Thank goodness I was able to de-Rickify myself and my bank account thanks me also. Just when I think I have it out of my blood I see a YouTube video of some dude wailing on Heart of the Sunrise and I MISS THAT SOUND SO MUCH.

I'd have paid more. I paid right around $1,500.00 each for the three I currently own, all used.

They just don't depreciate like other basses. I know $1,500.00 is only a couple hundred less than a brand new one from certain retailers, but for a gently used Ric it's still not bad.

Especially for a white one. Yum. I also found a turqouise for that price.

I found a Ric for $799.99 in instrument hell, earned $100, and I also came across $100. I now have $214. It isn't nearly enough for the Ricks that I found that were from 1971-1974. I have about 10% of the money I need to buy the best looking one that, thankfully, has free shipping. Unfortunately they all cost $1,999.99 to $2,500. I need to get more jobs so I can work more and longer. :(

That's why I don't have enough for a Ric. Last months pay check went to the fretless SX and I saved up money for the Kingston CRB. My boss is trying to use me less and less because money is getting tight and there isnt enough jobs for me to work on.

Sorry the rest of your post didnt load. So let me get this straight, youre currently saving for another bass after getting a new one, a fretless at that, last month and once you get that youll already be thinking of a Rick?

How long have you been playing bass, and do you play in any bands to even use all these?

Yes IMO a Rick is worth the dough, nothing sounds like a Rick they play great sound great and as a bonus they look awesome, they are nt that expensive they are the same as an american deluxe jazz and IMO sound better and they retain there value...but you ve gotta dig the sound and how they play

If you're on a limited budget (and who of us isn't?) and you really want a Rick, you are probably going to have to look for more recent years than '71-'74.

'71-'72 are pretty rare, and command quite a collector's premium if you can actually find one someone wants to sell one(NOT often!).
'73-'74 are the later years of the desirable collector vintages and are fairly uncommon, and collectors still pay more for these ('73 more than '74).
From '75 on you're pretty much into the higher production years and prices stabilize at a more reasonable plateau.

'80s and '90s 4003 basses are usually a better value: prices aren't elevated because collectors have little interest in a 4003 unless its a COY (colour of the year), and they're every bit as good, if not better, than a 4001.
That white 4003 with the black trim that sold for $1225 was an excellent deal: uncommon colour, BT option, very good condition. Well worth the price paid and then some.

It's really all based on the standard supply & demand. If Rics were cranked out moreso than they are now, they would probably lose out on some of their resale value. They don't have cheap options of their 4003 or 4004 basses, like Fender who has cheap Squier, and mexi Fenders, which hurt the resale value of their USA made instruments. Some people don't care if it says MIM or China or Indonesia on the back of their headstock. Just elaborating on your point Cassius.:)

I am very perplexed at the current value of ricks. I bought the chris squire model the first year in 91 after seeing at the namm show. I really wanted the maple glow 4001v63 but the guy at the rick booth said I should get the squire model because they were only going to make 1000 of them. Now I see the maple glow and others go for $2500 and there's a squire bass going for $2000 at gtr center and thery're usually high. Is that because they are building less of them now or is it maybe that less people want a bass with someones name on the pickguard?

If you found a real 4001CS for $2000 in decent condition, not modded or hacked up, buy it immediately! It should have the certificate with it to be sold at full value.
You WILL make money reselling it.

A new current production 4003 MG sells for $1600-1900 depending on where you buy it, the CS basses are no longer being made and haven't been for quite a few years (and I remember reading somewhere that they didn't actually build all 1000).

Wasn't Squire a bassist, guitarist, key board player, and singer? And didn't he also work with Fender?
