Is anyone else completely in love with their tone?

I'm definitely the happiest I’ve ever been with my tone, thanks to:

- Mike Lull M5Vs (Sadowsky and Trickfish preamps)
- Mesa amps
- Bergantino cabinets
- Genzler Magellan Pre (for in-ear gigs)

I (re-)learned that expensive lesson recently. When I practice for a few months after not playing for a long time eventually the tone returns along with the chops.

On the plus side I have some very nice preamps now.

Totally. P bass, real old dead Chromes, Ampeg. Dry mid range grindy punch, works with everything. Sounds dull solo but in a band cuts like a knife... kinda J bass bridge PU but with more heft. Perfect.

If I may ask, have you been able to compare the Chromes with some Fender s/s flats ?

I just built a preamp that despite knowing it has some issues, I do find myself gravitating to play it over my other gear. I'm trying to determine if its just bias towards myself or if I got the sound in my head because I made it. For a long time I thought I needed a mid forward tone and sometimes I still do, but I'm finding that its more a question of which mids.

I use a similar rig, GK 400RB or 800RB, 2 Bag End s15 cabs, and Ibanez RKB900 (Passive PJ bass) with EB Cobalt flats.

THIS IS THE WAY.

The RKB is a late model answer to my 1981 Ibanez RS924, I think. That '81 is what made me fall in love with Ibanez

The best tone I ever had was going directly through the Mic input of the Technics living room organ I once owned, it wasn't that loud though, perfect for home practice, and it had like 5 speakers of different sizes build in.

Kind of regret getting rid of that organ.

Very clear and articulate, full, clean tone.

It sounded amazing, but it weighted like a ton.

This sounds like you might want to try a PA speaker/powered speaker?

I'm curious to try one as well, but I already have a surplus of amps and cabs.

My current setup is "amp-less", and I do own a pretty amazing sounding FRFR PA speaker (15" woofer/1.7" tweeter, with a crossover at 2.3kHz) that I play through when not at home practicing through headphones.

And I do love my current tone.

Still there was something extraordinarily magical about the amp and speakers build into that specific organ.
