Is everyone okay??

I actually find this forum to be better than many of the others which I used to frequent. The complaining is generally benign, or in good humor, or topical.
I mean... Come on...
We're bass players.
We are the groove.
We aren't generally out to be jarring or obnoxious... And if we are... It's probably a knee jerk reaction.
I have found most are willing to hear both sides of an argument... And at least ponder the other viewpoint.
You don't have to agree... But it usually ends with the understanding that people are different, and we don't need to agree.

Unless you hate Fender... Like I do.
...Then I am apparently a terrible bass player who knows nothing and kills kittens in front of small children...
And I laugh maniacally.

Hey, gang.

I'm usually cheery, coming at ya with the exclamation points in abundance. But I've been noticing a lot of "Old man yells at cloud" type situations arising across the forums as of late. I mean, even more than normal. I just wanted to take a few minutes to check in with you all.
I’m ok, thanks for asking. I have to remember to not respond/reply to those type of threads, often the OP will inquire about something, but really only want to “GET THEIR POINT ACROSS”, should you disagree or partially disagree you will be promptly “SCOLDED”. I’m not sure if I’m getting my point across???

I think the pandemic and political tensions have exacerbated the things most of us struggle with. We are seeing record levels of mental health issues. I hope everyone is doing their best to take care of themselves and prioritize their wellbeing.

This is mostly a great place, but an opinion might depend on which particular forums a person tends to focus on? For me it's mainly Luthiers Corner where people are mostly friendly helpful and not at all snippy. I venture out into the wider Talkbass world a bit and sure, there tends to be a bit more moaning, tetchiness and chips on shoulders in some areas. When it comes to the P versus J, flats, tort, Fender Gibson Rickenbacker stuff, I just assume that most comments are meant to be jokes or are ironic, if they're not, they probably should be...;)

Still by general internet standards, things are pretty civil around here, as it should be, it's centered around making music for %#$@*&# sakes.

I guess some of the frustration you are seeing stems from the fact that, at best, this forum can be a wonderful tool for education and community building. It very often isn’t that.
The endless threads on P vs J, what color pickguard? what flats should I buy? Etc. become very tiresome.
End of the day, this forum is social media and the best way to not get annoyed is to limit your exposure to it.
It is my only social media.

I had french toast , bacon and good coffee for breakfast while watching CBS Sunday Morning. The world is a fine and sunny place!

To prepare the french toast, I used the 1950's "mid century modern" GE griddle I inherited from my mom. I did a lot of scrubbing to get the griddle surface so clean, but it works fantastic!

Well I just used my old Westinghouse Roaster the other day. Old things never fail, we just get angry. joking.

Thank you for asking.
As the Buddhists might say, "I'm joyfully participating in the sorrows of existence."
I have work, a beautiful child, a place to live, a bass to play, friends to play with, and a gig this weekend.
It sound corny but I'm truly grateful for all of that, and that makes the days good.
Peace bro. Also thanks for giving people a safe thread to talk, cause maybe this forum is one of the things they look forward to.

There are all sorts of miscommunications here, and it seems not to matter how carefully you say things as an OP, there will be someone who reads all sorts of stuff into it that was never said and comes up with something weird that you then have to explain. I tend to limit the number of threads I start for this reason.

But yes, sometimes people post and just want their own opinions affirmed, or will find 1000 reasons to reject the 1000 bits of advice they've solicited for a problem they claim to want to solve. I can't wrap my head around those sorts of posts, so I just try not to get in too deep.

Best bit of advice I can offer you is that if a thread is going south for those reasons and you find yourself tempted to respond, put the OP on ignore and that thread will not come up in any of your search results (except for watched threads, I think). You can do what I do and prune your ignore list periodically to let everyone out of jail except known repeat offenders. Makes the experience here a little less weird.
