Is Fender overrated?

Totally depends on the Fender you are talking about. Now, if you really want cost and 'value' to balance out you'd do best buying a CV Squire, IMO. For all intents and purposes, these are really nice 'Fenders' for a really nice price. In my experience these beat any 70s 'real' Fender I've owned/played.
Don't buy one. They suck.
Almost every professional bassist for the last 60 years has played a Fender.... but they are all nuts and should have played something else.

My opinion.... I don't care for them at all. Does this matter for you? No. Go try different basses and buy what you like.

There is nothing wrong with your Squier. For the price in trading up your Squier to Fender, you could have the Squier professionally checked and fret-leveled by a qualified luthier, and upgrade to a preamp, a new set of pickups, or just different tone circuits. Believe me, the new Squiers on not slouches, as a quick search on TB for "Squier Vs. Fender" will point out.
I've had a lot of local, notable bass players compliment me on the sound of both my Fender and Squier VM jazz basses. And I bought the Fender used for less than the Squier used.
Once again, play what you like, play it well, and make sure it's in top order. People don't listen to the money you (over)spent on your bass, they listen to your bass.

I say it time and time again...ignore the headstock...
The most important thing IMHO when it comes to a musical instrument is that it feel good. To me this is the most important aspect of playing....i can always change pickups or change the paint...IMHO looks are the absolute least important and very low on my list..
does a new suit look great? well sure it does, but it is not as comfortable as a well worn pair of jeans and a 100% cotton t-shirt
you should let you tone do the talking...not what is on the headstock...
i can't begin to tell you how much crap i get in my local scene for playing a Traben bass...until they hear me play and then all of a sudden they want to know the settings on my amp, or if i swapped out the electronics or what magic pedal i'm using...lol
(for the record i use Hartke amps and have since the mid 80's...and my cabs were designed a built by me using eminence drivers)

I own a 2,000.00 dollar bass and i choose to play a $500.00 dollar bass because it is more comfortable and sounds better to my ears and plays nice with my equipment
that is the absolute best piece of advice i can give you...
if you just want to change your bass because it's a Squier and not because you don't like some aspect of it's tone or construction then your simply a victim of G.A.S. or vanity..
have you thought about swapping out the electronics? or the neck? or the bridge? Or having it painted a different color?
sometimes something as simple as a neck adjustment, a fret dressing, or a new bridge can make a huge change it the sound and feel of an bass!
these days many of the VM And CV Squiers rival the higher priced Fenders anyway...
so you have to ask yourself a serious question.. do you want to change for you? or how some people in your circle perceive you?
Like the POS Lakland Skyline I bought because they were so well regarded here that cost just as much as a new Fender? Or the L2500 I owned that sounded about as sterile as a neutered cat? Maybe your referring to the Warmouth basses people like to build, only to find they need a $300 fret job and sell for next to nothing used because they hold no resale value?
+1000 to people thinking for themselves. My days of taking others "suggestions" regarding basses are over.
Ok so then other than fender I've had my eye on schecter. I'm not even a real fan of metal, I just really liked the way they play. Just out of curiosity, what do u guys think of them? Id just like to know is all, dont start trolling and hating

But anywho, they're only overrated to you if you think they're overrated. Some people might think they're underrated. There are so many different Fenders out in the wild anyway that a blanket statement like that doesn't really mean a whole lot. Not every Fender is made the same.

i have found them to be fairly well built with a nice fit and finish...but none of them have really spoken to me in terms of feel....their weak point seems to be their electronics...
though i'm kinda digging the stargazer at the moment...

I really appreciated this response. However. I honestly like nothing about my squire. I simply bought it as a beginner because it was cheap, and that may sound bad, but that's why I want to upgrade. To find that bass that feels like worn jeans.
