Is Flea not using Modulus anymore?

I don't know why Modulus doesn't keep making their own ''Lane Poors'' Pups, if they are able to..??
His new Modulus does sound different than the old ones.. So maybe, those Lane Poors has been changed..??

That was the original idea behind the SD's. They sent them an LP and said "copy it" as has been said a few times on here. And by most accounts, it's pretty dead accurate. And b/c Mod doesn't own the name or licensing rights to LP, they can't affiliate themselves in any way with the brand so they just made their own. :)

Since Flea is such a big famous rich rock star...why doesn't he just have custom basses made for him from scratch?? If I had his budget, that's certainly what I'd do.

You do realize that he plays a Modulus Flea Bass, right? :eyebrow: That is his custom bass, made just for him... and when you look at what Modulus sends him stock vs. the rest of it, there's nothing really not-custom on it.

I found that on Myspace.com
and his Modulus with Lane Poor pups, is the sound wich I need.
Maybe it's not nice putting the others space in here, sorry.
But, am I the only one who feel the BIG difference between those 2 pups?
Sorry again, I am not in the thread subject :s

That sounds extremely similar to my Flea when it had the basslines. Now I'm using a Modulus Lane Poor and it sounds pretty much the same as that clip. Not a big difference between the basslines and LP in my opinion.

Yeah, there's been tests done between the pickups only and the difference is negligible, if even perceptable by most ears.

However a different pickup in a different bass entirely will have a different sound, as Modulii are still hand-made (I believe), so like Pedullas and Zon's, they're all gonna be somewhat different.

No, Modulus basses are CNC'ed, which is the reason they are so consistent. Occasionally you will find a hand-carved Modulus, but they are very, very rare.

I meant the bodies. I'd heard the Quantums were hand-made still. I knew the necks never were, but this is news to me! :)
Yeah, all their bodies are CNC'ed. The necks are layered sheets of carbon, so naturally it has to be a hands-on process. The biggest hold-up on a custom ordered Modulus is the neck fabrication.

CNC often gets dogged for being impersonal and such, but I'd rather have it any day. Hand-crafted basses aren't ALWAYS what they're cracked up to be. There's lots of room for variation, and most any luthier can cut a corner or make a mistake on any given day depending on things like mood, sickness, time, stress, shop-lighting, router bit age, whatever. I know some hand-made instruments look more like a work of art than something you'd actually play, and that's cool. I can appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship in something like that. When it all works it is great. But a gigging bass is something a little different I think. The artistry is in what comes from the instrument, and it's ability to hold up long term. I think Modulus basses are the ultimate gig workhorses. Of course I own two of them, so I'm biased. But their stability, dependability, consistency, and excellent fret work make them something I can rely on each and every time I pull them out of the gig bag, regardless of temperature or humidity. Living on the Gulf Coast, this is such a big benefit that it's hard to place value on it. I don't think I could get that warm, fuzzy feeling from a $5000 hand-made bass, at least not on the gig.
