Is Flea not using Modulus anymore?

I'm just wondering what you mean by "growl", specifically. We all have our own definitions of what that might be, and when I play HARD, behind the pickup or right on it, it gets more of that "J by the bridge" sound as opposed to the front of it or closer to the neck... YMMV, naturally. :)
But one reason I love Mod's so much is they're damn sensitive to your playing style and the bass can sound a lot different on the exact same settings as someone else, which you can't say about a lot of other basses. :)

By growl I mean, this agressive sound that it can has when you give a hard attack on the string..
but I'm not sure what are the exact settings that I have to use for my 2 band Modulus to get this sound. I always cut the treble and the bass to have a right sound.

For me, this is the ultimate live tone in the clip below. Would anyone else agree that his tone in this clip is really "growly"?

Unless that was changed post-recording or on the soundboard, there's no way that's his Modulus IMO.
That sounds almost identical to the record, on which he used his vintage J.
Could be wrong, but maybe a Genesis, VJ or Quantum with the chechen fingerboards could do that, but not a Flea. I think that's his J before switching. :)

Nope, that's his Modulus at the Roundhouse concert. Saw pics and he used his Modulus. Also, that sounds distinctly Modulus.

I never saw Flea using a 3 band Modulus bass, he always used a 2 bands EQ Modulus basses in live. Maybe, because it's easier to change..
He usually uses the Bartolini NTBT pream 2 bands EQ
But maybe, with his new sunburst bass, it's an Aguilar OBP-2, am I wrong?

His Modulus basses are spec'd as follows:

Lane Poor
Aguliar OBP-1 Preamp
Badass II bridge

Some of his Flea's actually have the tone controls for the preamp on the inside of the cavity. I only saw that on his aboriginal bass though.

Hrm, I have a Flea 5 and that sounds a tad growly for me! But, not using a crazy GK rig that's EQ'd JUST for my bass, ya know... ;)
I play mine most of the time direct through my Avalon into Westone UM2 IEMs, so, it's a tad clearer!

Yep, that's a Modulus in here! This one sounds a little different than the old Modulus that he has, but yes, that's growl for me..

go to 01:06

and that?

I feel stupid, lol

Those are both old, and is the blue sparkle one w/ all his stickers. Not the same as his newer one he had made to replace the Jazz.
I'm still in disbelief that that "Charlie" audio clip is his Mod! If so, I wanna see and/or find out how he gets that sound, cause I want my Flea5 sounding like that FOH!!

Found this one while looking around for their new stuff. You can find some vids from early 2006 when he's playing the Jazz, and yeah compared to this new Flea which IMO sounds noticeably different than his one used for the By The Way (and I like better), the Jazz gets pretty buried sometimes when he's not playing on the D and G strings above the 12th fret.

But sure does sound damn good on the record!! :bassist:

he used his modulus (the same one he used when i saw them) at the Grammys tonight, so i guess he is.

cool clips

i got ahold of the songbook versions of all the tracks off of Stadium Arcadium where its all the original bass and guitar tracks with no vocals or drums, and you can definetly hear the flatwounds on the Jazz.
I'm curious about a few tracks where it sounds like modulus, since he says he used his Jazzy exclusively on the album.

from what i was told when i bought my modulus was that modulus had some LP pickups left and flea bought all of them [ i want to say 30 or so for some reason ] ... so he might just be putting those pickups in his new basses

Flea's tech told me that every bass that they get from Modulus for Flea comes with a Lane Poor. Guess Modulus stocked up on the LP's before he went out of business. I would like to know how many they actually saved for Flea though.

They weren't all for him, because every Flea Stefan had made in the last 3-4 years has LP's installed. So, Flea's had like 3, Stefan at least 4, I think 5, so we're cuttin' down now!
Wonder what it'd cost to get a custom 35" job w/ an LP like Stefan had done... :hmm:

Yeah I saw that at G.C. this weekend and was thinking about picking it up.
However I've just been sitting in my practice room w/ my laptop playing along and I'm pickup up a lot. I got Stadium Arcadium nailed last night and am working on Hump De Bump, which is fun as hell!
I didn't know they were gonna be on the Grammys- otherwise I'd of watched for those 5 minutes. :hmm: What song did they play?
