Is Flea not using Modulus anymore?

I'd heard and FMCP can review this, that it was when LP was going to quit making them and therefore supplying them to Modulus.
Honestly I can't see how mine could sound much better than it does. It's friggin' killer.

I have a 2004 Flea bass and it came with the basslines. It sounded sweet as hell. In November '05 I put a LP in it. Sounded sweet as hell still. It's not a huge difference in my opinion. The basslines is pretty killer.

I'd put one just for the sake that it's a Flea w/ a LP if I ran across one. But I'm not gonna search and spend $400 on it something... ;)

That's exactly why I have a LP in mine. It sounds as good as the basslines but it's for the sake of it. I got mine from a guy here on talk bass for $200. I'm still on the lookout for a Modulus branded one because my Flea isn't complete till I get a mod LP :smug:

I think there is too much emphasis on the pickup aspect of Flea's tone. The graphite has a lot to do with it.

Ha, good point- if you've ever played one, you get "his" sound right outta the box! You have to cut the treble to about 25% to get it right for anyone else... ;)

I agree that basslines sounds good, but when I learned that Lane Poor Modulus pickups has more growl, and sounds more clear, I wasn't very happy, because I've bought this bass for growl, I just love growl and I have everything with my basslines but growl :(
But I have to say, that Basslines sounds much better in Slap, I can see that with Flea's concert compared to my bass.
Except that, the bass is wonderfull! Thanks ;)

The difference between the two, according to most everyone that has been able to do side-by-side comparisons, is almost non-existant. Don't be unhappy with what you have. The Lane Poor pickups wouldn't make any difference. The LP's have a mystique about them that has been generated largely because they are no longer being manufactuered, so their value has gone up.

It's the kind of like the painter who can't sell his paintings when he's alive, but then he dies and his stuff is worth millions. The Lane Poors were nice pickups, but they won't transform your bass. Lots of Fleas growl comes from his hands, that low (too low) action, and aggressive playing style.

Quoted for truth. I agree, the LP's just have a mystique about them. They are sweet pickups no doubt, but the basslines that was copied off them is pretty damn close. Like I said, I may have a LP in mine but it's strictly sentimental.

Every word from this is truth and I know that ;) I'm very happy with my bass.
But even when I play aggressive ( I always play agressive) I don't feel the growl, especially like '' By the way '', it's nothing like it.. I have tried everything, except a compressor..

Edit: Listen to ''by the way'' live at slane castle, where he used a Modulus with Basslines, I think it was pretty different :s
He looks like he got rid of it at the end of the song, and took back his old Modulus with Lane Poors.

What part of "BTW" are you talking about? Because they're in drop D, and he played the chorus and other parts of it on one of his G-K heads with the Gain, etc. maxed to get that kind of "overdrive" feel.

I think you're reading too much into this. They sound identical by most accounts, even by people who've swapped pickups in the same bass. No difference. As for what Flea sounded like on a recording, who knows what's in the signal chain to affect the tone. His tone on stage might have one sound, while a complete different set of effects is used for the recording. It could have been recorded dry, and then mixed down later. You just really don't know.

If I were you, I would forget about Lane Poor pickups once and for all. Just my opinion, however.

I just took two shots with my crappy camera phone. There are no markings on a modulus basslines pickup.

On this pic, Here's what I'm seeing for his live amp EQ settings:

Upper-Left 2001RB (MAIN UNIT) and Lower Left 2001RB:
Treble - 11:00 - 12:00
Hi-Mid - 11:00 - 12:00
Lo-Mid - 9:00 - 10:00?
Bass - 12:00

Upper-Right and Middle Right 2001RBs:
Treble - 12:00
Hi-Mid - 11:00
Lo-Mid - 8:30
Bass - 8:30

Lower-Right 2001RB:
Dialed Out (likely a backup)

Common Settings on the active 2001RB units in the rack:
OVERDRIVE CHANNEL IS DIALED OUT COMPLETELY (Not in use!)

Level-A (Clean Channel) - 12:00
Contour - 11:00
Presence - 1:00

Boost - 1:00
Tweeter - 8:00 - 8:30
Woofer - 11:00

So, the tweeter and woofer settings aren't a big deal - those are relative to the volume required. But it's important to note their relationship; the tweeter is dialed low, and the woofer is dialed high. There is a significant amount of Boost present, contributing to the growl. But, his channel level isn't too high, so much of that growl must be originating from the instrument itself.

Based on this photo... it seems that one 2001RB is being run exclusively to the PA as a giant preamp/DI. The other three units run his three 410RBH/115RBH stacks. He's maintaining a strong hi-mid/treble overall, with significantly reduced low mids, likely to emphasize the top-end growl and deep bass of his tone.

Hopefully, this clears up a lot of arguments!

Yep, a I did forgot about it for a while, but now I'm trying to have growl and I can't.. it's ok, the bass is great, and I'm happy enought with it:) . I really don't care about having the 'flea' sound, I've just wanted growl.. Anyway thanks..;)

I'm just wondering what you mean by "growl", specifically. We all have our own definitions of what that might be, and when I play HARD, behind the pickup or right on it, it gets more of that "J by the bridge" sound as opposed to the front of it or closer to the neck... YMMV, naturally. :)
But one reason I love Mod's so much is they're damn sensitive to your playing style and the bass can sound a lot different on the exact same settings as someone else, which you can't say about a lot of other basses. :)
