Is it abuse?

When I was a little younger back in South Africa we used to get our mouths washed out with soap if we swore. I don't think it's scarred me at all or whatever, or was ever a massive deal, so 'abuse' might be a strong word, but looking back it is a bit of totalitarian thing to do, and if I was a parent and someone was feeding my kids soap as some sort of disgusting corporal punishment, I'd be pretty pi**ed.

Reading that back, I started off pretty calm and got more and more angry as I wrote it, so on revision I think that yes, I think it is abuse, a useless punishment and something that, if it happened now, would result in a fairly violent response from me.

Yes it is. The kid will turn blind and THEN the parent's will be sorry.

When I was in elementary school if a kid cussed our teacher would take a wad of that old brown paper towel and shoot a generous blort of Wisk brand dish soap on it, then the offending unit was required to hold the wad of soapy paper in their mouth for about a minute.

A lot of kids lasted about long enough to close their mouth good before they upchucked all over everything. All the class rooms had a counter with a kitchen sized double bowl sink in it at the back of the room which was were the punishment would be meted out so the pukers could just lean over the sink if needed or the cussing kid could rinse their mouth out after being allowed to spit out the soapy wad. Good times I tell ya.

Oh and about what kid's pick up from their parents.

One of my neighbors had a couple grandsons (I think) around 5 and 7. One day I'm over visiting and Scott and Bryan are on at each other about something and one of them calls the other the long form of SOB to which the other replies that his brother looks like the female dog who gave birth to the SOB. Grandma called them down and went on to tell them that everyone had a book in heaven and when you said a bad word Jesus would put a check mark in your book. I don't remember which one, but one of them said "Then daddy's book must be full".

Little pitchers have big ears.

Why is that exactly? I've never understood why some behaviors are ok in the past but not now, and I'm not talking about extreme changes.

Because people are soft now. Parents are soft, they don't even keep score in little league. Everyone is special and all kids are winners even if they aren't. My parents never abused me, but they were tough. I would get so pissed at my dad when I was a kid for some of the things he did, but at 31 I am thankful he did. He taught me to respect the things I have and to work hard to get what I want, and I do. I am not going to make a sweeping generalization, but I see a lot of people in my age group who are lazy and entitled. They whine about everything that doesn't go their way and make excuses for their failures.
