is it just me ??? crowds have changed???

I have an 11 year old, and many friends with tweens, teens--I see how kids view entertainment, etc. etc. these days. As for bands and rock music, they're generally kind of "meh" about it. Heck even with the millennials, being in a band is simply not perceived to be particularly cool anymore.

I don't have kids, but that's what I've perceived, too. Music in general seems to be quite disposable for a lot of them.

If everyone is on their phone during the show, maybe the band could stop mid-set, pull out their phones and announce that "We need to check our phones for a few minutes."

I was at a Third Day concert a few years back where the lead singer stopped, pulled the guy on stage, asked for the phone and says "Hey, do you mind calling him back later? We're kind of in the middle of a concert right now."

I know most people are texting or videoing on their phones, not talking but ... I still see it. I know my wife can't even hear me on the phone if I'm getting ice out of the freezer. I don't see how you could talk on the phone during a concert.

Me personally... when I realized how much I was on my phone for no good reason, especially when I was with my kid, I junked my smart phone and went back to a flip phone. Real computers are much easier to use anyway, and they're just cumbersome enough to place natural limits. I'd never whip out the laptop during dinner. You do it all the time with your smart phone.

That's what it is. Instead of enjoying the moment, they like to be seen so by posting videos of their self on social media.

I always turn my phone off before entering any gig, if I am audience. No matter if it's needed or not. Then it comes as a natural second thing. I can't hear it anyway in the malaise of noise, and if it's silent gig with acoustic or classical, those pling abd bling can be of annoyance. If someone calls, they know I am "busy" in a big way because it replies back to them "The number can't be reached at the moment". Not knowing what goes on. Suits me fine.

I do have from time to time on festivals, took a still pic of some band, but then put down the phone/camera again. One pic per act is enough for me. On huge festivals there's a huge advantage if you're a bunch of people having lost each other and needs to gather again, but then everybody knows this and starts to watching their phones for a moment.

Well, I have heard "small amounts of something". The only other instance is when seeing some crumpet (female) passing by on the street. She's a dime, like 10 cent. But there are 20 cent coins as well...pence and so on. I am sure I never heard dime synonym for cranked. I always use cranked, flat out, maxxed. Mostly I've heard DIME in that regard. Not like in lights, that you DIM them. That's another word. Checked websters urban dictionary and can't find anything of it, but all other explanations of course. No "this one goes to eleven" anywhere. But you always learn something new.

If you're throwing your 2 cents in ... and they say "a penny for your thoughts" who's the one earning a cent?

No biggie. There's another saying "boss gets a dollar, I get a dime, that's why I poop on company time" lol

@swarfrat and @AshInAmsterdam I can tell you that inside Sweden we have totally opposite word meaning, different from north and south. In south of Sweden the word GRIN is just like you use it "with a grin on his face" i e laughing or a wry big smile. In north it means the totally opposite, i e crying "he grinned like a girlie".

So we have the same word (exact same spelling) for not only totally different meaning, but the OPPOSITE meaning, too.

And you bet misunderstandings can occur...

I've noticed that within Texas Country there tends to be more people dancing, drinking, flirting and fighting over the majority of the night than people recording us on their phones for the duration of the gig. Not saying those dancers, drinkers, flirts and fighters never Snapchat us, just that they do it earlier in the night, later as a backdrop to them and their friends having fun or sometimes getting Selfies and Snapchats with the band while we're onstage.

Works pretty well for me!

It is. So we in south of Sweden are more in line with Norweigan, and English, where grin is laugh, or a big smile on your face. Although we add an A in Swedish: Grina = to laugh (south) to cry (north). You bet there's huge misunderstanding. It isn't slang even. No one wants to comply to the other, so dialogs can turn quite absurd sometimes, but IF and only IF people are aware of these discrepancies you have to think silently first that "hey, he's from north, it means the opposite there" and then you'll just go "uh uh".

Maybe it's the same with the word dime? can mean a lot of things depending of which part of the country and region you're from?

It could also be in part from all the anti-depressant and other medications that are becoming eerily prevalent in the younger generations.

I think you're right to be concerned. IMO, technology and "anti-social" media is the worst thing to ever happen to real human interaction and enjoyment of life.

You see the same thing at a lot of sporting events nowadays too. Most kids cant function without phones and technology....once this younger generation is running our country were all screwed if technology goes down, because most dont know how to think or solve problems without it.....scary!!

Even the big festivals are changing. Asking artists to play just a handful of songs then move the next one on stage. Sounds like live music events are almost becoming the equivalent of a DJ or jukebox. Attention spans are short. People just want a backsplash for their social media. Why bother gigging?

I don't understand what people are doing with the pics and videos they shoot at shows. They are all garbage.

There is a push around our local scene to stop posting them on social media unless you're a pro. They're generally not a good representation of the band.
