i had a mental block about a song. I have a gig with these ladies and they want to do that song badly. Last night I went to bed and thought about that song all nigh, wok up around 4 and started to learn it. I could not get it the last time they asked me, this time I had it in about ten minutes. Anyone ever have a a song block just to wake up one day and BAMM they get it

Yeah , it's happened to me a couple of times. Racked my brain trying to figure out a song and just couldn't get it. A couple of days later , I woke up one morning and it was all there. Chord progressions , timing , and everything. Ran down to the basement and went through it once before I left for work.
I've had it work the other way around too. Had a song pretty much down , left it alone for a couple of days and couldn't get it back to save my life. Go figure. :rollno:

Yes. All the time. It usually takes a different perspective, and "envisioning" it being played correctly.

Ever have that mental block on stage when a song starts , and you've play this song many, many times, but at that very moment you cant remember for the life of you what key or what your suppose to play ? your cue is rushing up and your still drawing a blank ......... Aaaaaaaaaaahhhh !!!! what do you do ? OH NO !! here it comes.

and then..........at the last possible second before your band mates all turn and look at you funny

you remember what your suppose to do....disaster averted

Oh man, it sucks on stage to have that happen. The band leader calls a song you know it but all of a sudden you draw a blank, nothing, and what is worse is the bass line makes the song and you have to start it. Yes I've had those moments

Yes, this happens sometimes. I'll practice a tune over and over and not quite get it right, then the next day after sleeping on it I nail it on the first try.

Back when I played more videogames in college I actually found the solution to some game problems in my dreams. If only I could dream up solutions to more important things...

For me it was the solo in My Generation, the original version. I could not get it for years, then one day BAM!! Now it seems easy lol. Another one is Sweet Emotion!! I still wake up in cold sweats over Stormy Monday, but someday it too will pass, and I will then commit myself to the nearest sanitarium for musicians! Make the best of it, none of these are overly hard, especially in retrospect :)

Oh man I wish that happened to me! I had to learn part of a complicated song for the last gig (Constant Motion), spent two weeks before the show learning it and perfecting it, thinking "Yeh I've got this..." The moment comes up, and I can't for the love of every god on earth and beyond remember the first 20 seconds of the thing. Luckily the next song in the medley went perfectly...

Yes. All of this has happened to me.

And I'll go one step further.

I have even had to get on stage not having gotten through the mental block dreading a song coming on the list because I'm going to screw it up. Then, when the song gets here, I play it like I WROTE the dang bass line. Then I spend the rest of the set wondering who the heck possessed me and got me through it.

Oh yeah.
I have reached that part of life where I can say I have forgotten
more than many of you will ever know.
The trouble with that is that I really have forgotten.

The flip side of it is I used to have the honor of backing an old friend
that would fly in once a year from Europe to visit and we'd book a few gigs,
same group of guys that played together 50 years back.
He was SO freakin' good
Must have known thousands of songs.
When I say know, I mean inside out, every part, every nuance.
He could tell me the name, maybe who played it and the key
and I'd find myself playing it, even if I never had before...
onstage!
It was if I could read his mind.

Heart attack got him a couple of years back.

Damnit!
