There's a thread about this I started ages ago, I was also wondering the same thing, am on phone so can't post link but a search should find it. It's an expensive box but there are clips on YouTube, it does sound very good and seems to nail the Motown thing nicely.
That's what gave Jamerson his tone? I guess the whole one finger, extremely high action, years of playing jazz, strings older than Moses thing had nothing to do with it.

Well, yes, his playing/skill/etc were a huge part. But, when you listen to isolated tracks of his recording, you hear dirt/saturation/OD on his tracks, and that comes from the custom DI console they had in their studio. This DI is the reproduction of a single channel of that console. So, if you want as close as possible as his OD/breakup/dirt flavour he had, this is the box to have. in that sense, it is the Motown DI sound.
I see what you're saying, but let's be honest, his tone was nothing to write home about and if you're asking me to spend $400 to get it, I'll pass. It might be a nice novelty effect pedal that EHX could put out for $60-$70 but a $400 DI box is ridiculous.
They are really pushing the Triad transformer as the main tone component in this DI.
I wonder how close its specs are to the Triad transformer that I used in the iBuff DIY design.... hmmmmm.

Well, if the tone is nothing to write home about for you, then it's not a product for you. But, considering that the console in question is what they used for most of the instruments, it's probably a very cool box that people would want to own, even if it is just for studio use.
As for the 60-70$ EHX pedal thing, I find it doubtful that EHX could have a custom transformer built and put out the type of studio gear for that price point. The component cost alone in that thing is probably a lot higher.

That's a good point. Would the Transboost be close then?
Both the Transboost and iBuff use the Triad TY-250P transformer. The TY-250 is a 20-20KHz tranny, like what the Acme ad copy specifies. The iBuff is designed as a transformer DI, so it would be more along the lines as the Acme WB-3 DI design.

Well, I don't doubt your technical analysis in any way. It would be disappointing if it was just the small inexpensive (or very close to it) Triad transformer in there. I expected to find a larger custom thing in there. I will say that I have never seen a gut shot, so it's kind of not really reassuring. But, yeah, I would love to try one out for myself and see how it stacks up against the other circuits out there.
The Acme DI looks to be 100% passive, so I really doubt that they are using a Triad TY-250P. The TY-250P wouldn't have a high enough input impedance... the TY-250P has a 1Kohm input impedance.
But, I was thinking that the iBuff, with its active input buffer/driver, could possibly be in the same sonic neighborhood. If I ever get caught up, then I may have to compare the two.
I have a lot of respect for Triad and Edcor for making quality transformers for a very reasonable price.

The Wolfbox DI uses a Triad A-11J. The A-11J transformer costs approx $350. If their custom transformer is like the A-11J, then $399 isn't a bad price.

Yup, just found the Wikipedia on it. I remember that they had the first version that was more expensive. Still trying to figure out what the transformer in the subsequent Motown DIs is
I just found a few places that still have the A-11J in stock. It really is very expensive. If it was not, I'd just build one, the schematic is super simple.
Yeah, most passive DI's don't have much in the box. Reading thru some of that thread, the input z varies quite a bit from like 10K to 110K. I would think that you would need a buffer to prevent loading at 10K for passive bass guitars. Maybe that loading on passive pickups is part of the motown sound?

Maybe a buffer that can be bypassed. Heck, I could build that into a pedal, add a footswitch for the buffer, add one for the DI portion itself. I could turn that around for like 430$ in parts
The original wolf boxes went for twice that. The sigma sound DI which uses a triad transformer is around 700-800 as well.

so I go to the link, and there is a demo video..... a guitar then bass plays ....with alternating shots of the box with the dial at zero.....I don't get it .....what does it do? and why not demo at 3/5/8/10 on the dial...I hear no reverb
