Is Questlove a Great Drummer?

If you are in the rhythm section and you make it about the artist you're backing and not about you, you get a lot of work.;) I love his playing!

The song "You Got Me", is what sparked my interest with Quest years back. The ending, when he transforms from a simple pattern to syncopated badassery is awesome.

There are some vids of him soloing online. Dude has chops, as well as groove, and more importantly the knowledge of when to demonstrate both/either.

I haven't heard huge amounts of his work. But what I have heard has been dead-on solid.

I used to differentiate the first two drummers that I worked with long time by saying one wanted to be Neal Peart and the other wanted to be Charlie Watts.

?uestlove would be a much better example of what Mark did right than Charlie really was.

Love Questlove.

Was lucky enough to see the Philadelphia Experiment a number of years back at Bonnaroo. He played a drum solo and starting moving around the room playing on different objects..including the table i was sitting at :) Dude is an awesome drummer, perfect time and feel. Love his work with D'Angelo too!

I'm a bit of a Questlove and Roots fanboy. I love the Purdie comparison, I think it's apt. In addition, the guy has a huge musical vocabulary, which I believe has driven a lot of the Roots' success (and certainly led to the Fallon gig). I saw them live in 2006 and they were amazing; I said then that those guys can play anything they want, so the late-night gig is a perfect fit.

They're about to put out an album where they collaborated with another guy with broad-ranging tastes, Elvis Costello. Can't wait for that one.

Agree with all the pro-? Comments thus far.

The philadelphia experiment, wake up with John legend and the album that the roots did with booker T are all great and display questloves abilities as a drummer as well as his knack as a producer. He's the man!

Check out the record he did with Al Green a few years back called 'Lay it Down'. One of the most under-known records of the last decade, especially for fans of old school funk, soul, and rhythm and blues. Quest Love put the whole thing together and he crushes that old soul vibe (along with the rest of the band). I was actually upset the year this record came out with how little attention was paid to this gem.
