Is there anyone making "Exotic" Jazz basses out there??

What I mean is....

Is there a company or luthier out there known for making a more traditionally shaped "J" styled bass, but with the "exotic" or "boutique" aesthetics?? I'm talking beyond a high end Sadowsky...

I'm talking multi laminate bodies, 7 piece necks, peghead veneers, wooden knobs and pickup covers etc....kinda exotic. I just want it in a recognizable J bass package.

Who or what am I looking for???

And if some of you have already found it, I do encourage the posting of some eye candy. ;)

The second from the right is and [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] 5 string ... it's kinda a J on steroids! The coral pink bass just behind it is mine, it's my second LeCompte.

Somebody mentioned Callowhill. I'm REALLY tempted to try one of the Junk 5 string basses.

The one thing that is stopping me is that I've already filled my need for a high end 5 string J-bass when I picked up this Devon from Mr. Majestic. I guess 13 neck laminates qualifies as "Exotic".

Now I'm seeing what I wanna see!!!! Wow!!!!

One thing I've noticed though is alot of custom Jazzes, seem to only get as crazy as a body wood, with one veneer and a top wood at most.

I was hoping to see some MTD like multi laminate bodies. Multiple accents, core wood, exotic top and back etc etc.....

I think my GAS might be bordering dementia....

Try Tom Clement-he's a TBer and I just got a J-shaped bass from him a month ago.

Mine's #94. His take on a J shape. I chose P and MM style pickups but he'll install whatever you want.

Tom offers a WORLD of options.
Mine has a swamp ash body, a black accent veneer and a burl redwood top but I'm sure he'd do more laminates if you wanted them. I have a 5 piece neck (bubinga core, wenge stringers and walnut on the outside) with a gorgeous coco bolo fretboard. He only does bolt-ons but for a Jazz, that's usually what you'd want-right?


His prices are pretty reasonable for a completely custom bass. Per the website, his prices start at $1150 for a passive 4 string with one pickup. And thats with Hipshot hardware and your choice of a Bart or Nordy pickup!! You can also send him parts you already have or stuff you order yourself-he'll use whatever you want.

The only 2 things he does NOT do are neck-thru's and colored finishes. His basses are natural only in either oil or poly or both. Mine has oil on the neck and poly on the body-Tom recommended the poly because he said the redwood is a softer wood.

Check him ouot and send him an e-mail about what you're looking for in an exotic J-you might be surprised!!
