Is this the latest eBay scam?

Makes me wonder who might possibly go for a sales…er… 'arrangement' like this guy's. I had to read it (here) about three times before I figured out exactly (I think) what this clown was proposing. If I ran into it on eBay I wouldn't have managed to make myself read all the way through it even once

I just had someone try to run a scam on me over an EBMM Bongo on ebay. As soon as I paid--they cancelled the transaction. Then, claimed they cancelled it by mistake and that paypal debited their account the price of the bass and gave it back to me. They demanded that I send 2 full payments claiming that I had never been debited the first payment. They were claiming I got two refunds. They didn't know I am a lawyer. I burned their shorts.

Pissed me off big time. At first thought the seller was just an idiot so I actually had a phone conversation with her---she was a scammer. I played her like a slap bass. Then--I got a phony demand letter from paypal. She went from pissing me off-- straight into federal prison territory. Paypal is prosecuting her.

edit: This happened in the early weeks of this past December. The bass has been removed and the seller no longer has an active ebay account.

This reminds me of an ebay transaction where I bought an Arc'Teryx jacket and returned it because it was a fake. The seller ended up making a bunch of threats after I replied to his email asking if I got my refund. While I knew full well the threats were BS it was still a little unsettling.

So I had to read this a number of times before I realized what this guy was even talking about.

I.D. Label For Heartfield DR-5 Bass, black sparkle finish, no fret wear, etc. | eBay

The gist of it is that the seller doesn't claim to sell the bass but intimates that he will ship it to you after you purchase the "ID tag" and you were payment has been held by him for several weeks.

His assertion is that PayPal can yank money from a bona fide seller anytime within the first three weeks for a little reason.

But if you look a little more carefully, it appears that what he's trying to do is 1)get you to send him the purchase price for a bass without actually ever explicitly and therefore without contractually mentioning that he is selling you a bass and 2) he holds your money until the PayPal window of protection elapses so if he doesn't even want to send you the bass he doesn't have to. And if he actually does intend to send it to you, you have no buyer protections.

So beware everybody!

agree it Sure sounds like a scam!
Scammers SUCK!!!

I know GAS is a thing, but you should never want a bass badly enough to consider this sort of deal. Buying blind is a thing as well, and I've done it many times! However I've walked away from any deal that sounds in any way shifty. End of story.
