Is this the laziest generation?

exactly. the jaded " I wanna be your friend and not your parent" generation before them. Pacify with all the tech they whine for, repeat.

I was gonna go there, but was hoping someone else would. It's not always the Parents alone, it's the whole paradigm shift.

Absolutely.

My gal has a 20 year old who has never had a job and refuses to find one. She kicked him out to the back yard in a tent. He can come in for dinner, that's it. STILL doesn't go look. She is the hardest working woman I have ever known and tried to instill it in him, to no avail. His friends ..... all the same.

Which generation? the current under 20's? Id certainly say they're shockingly more self absorbed and have a way unwieldy sense of entitlement.

not all mind you, but certainly a very high percentage.

Funny, but I seem to remember our parents saying the same thing about us Boomers when we were young. Seems like the old saying "the more things change the more they stay the same" rings true here!

Not ME, I'm way too AWESOME, dude! :hiding:

Seriously though, I see his points on the whole "Like"-ing of things on Facebook instead of actually "do"-ing. But other than that, I don't totally agree.

Nah, laziness is just this generation's way of getting blamed by older people. There will be a next generation to blame after that one, I promise. It will be more alarming even, and we will all shake our heads in disbelief of how they act. I promise. It will be unbelievable, it will disrespect our values, the true ones, all the time. It won't learn anything from the wise grown-ups who taught them, and we will all be doomed. I promise.

Yes, I'm getting off your lawn now.

True dat!

And who raised them to be that way? *looks at all the people 30 and older* :hiding:

I'm thirty-five, and not lazy. Neither is my wife, who is a bit younger. We're working to make sure our kids have a sense of proportion and an appreciation for the rewards of hard work.

The reason being, we've seen other peoples' kids and the twenty-somethings behind us, and it's horrifying how much some people want for almost no work, and the attitude of "you owe it to me" that seems to come with it.

I've seen it in older people, though, too. The youngest generation seems to be the most susceptible, but it looks like a cultural thing more than an age thing.

My dad blames his generation for hosing ours, by the way. He's 67, and believes the boomers screwed their kids royally in a lot of ways.

Each generation has its pitfall characteristics and its redeeming qualities. I grew up in the 80's; we were a truly doomed generation (per the previous generation or two), but somehow, we have survived and succeeded.
I have a (nearly) 15 year old daughter. She shows me the diversity required to be a kid / young adult today. A multitude of social, athletic and academic talents are a must and technological understanding that is certainly greater than it was when I was her age. She is a "do-er", of that there is no doubt, and she is an honor roll student, but occasionally I am alarmed by what I consider to be a lack of education - is technology actually (and truly) making our kids less intelligent?

I've heard talk that learning cursive is no longer going to be required. Is this an advancement? I'm not sure.

This next part goes a little far-a-field of the OP, but what the heck, I'll mention it.

Sometimes she doesn't know what I feel she should know at her age (American history is particular). So, is this her not knowing what she should be taught, or is this me expecting too much???

Here's what I don't understand: She's an "A" honor roll student...along with about half of her class. So, are they all that sharp, or has the bar in current American education been set too low? It used to be quite an achievement to be on the honor roll and only 15% or so of the students in my classes made it. It seems simple when over half of them make it now.

She's never heard of a "grading curve". This aspect of the current generation concerns me - it appears that all-too-often it is more important to make a student feel good than ensuring that they have done well enough to earn an "A". I described the concept of a grading curve to her told her to get used to the idea of competition for grades...it will become a harsh reality eventually; college if not sooner.

Thoughts?
