Is this the laziest generation?

Absolutely.

My gal has a 20 year old who has never had a job and refuses to find one. She kicked him out to the back yard in a tent. He can come in for dinner, that's it. STILL doesn't go look. She is the hardest working woman I have ever known and tried to instill it in him, to no avail. His friends ..... all the same.

She has 2 major problems with her son.

1) She lets him live in the back yard. He probably goes into the house when she is at work.

2) She feeds him.

The solution would be to change the locks, remove the tent and cut off the food supply - all handouts actually.

They've definitely lowered the bar.

I have an 11 year old nephew, and every time I see him I talk to him about school and what he's learning and I'm always amazed how ignorant he is in a lot of subjects (even though he's an A and B student). No Child Left Behind definitely ****ed our education system.

YES - I have talked to way too many young people looking for jobs. They expect the world to be handed to them, and most are not willing to work for it. All the good jobs in the near future are going to go to immigrants or children of immigrants that have a work ethic and worked hard to get a good education instead of goofing off. You can see this in the number of jobs young people have had in just a couple of years. They don't take a job seriously. Sorry guys.

It surely is the reponsibility of the parents, but this does not change the facts.

Every generation in history said:
Is this the laziest generation?

Before you answer, remember that you yourself are discussing this on the internet, just for fun, instead of building a skyscraper or a railroad or taming the wild frontier of a new continent, which is what your great-great-great-grandfather might have been doing.

Funny, but I seem to remember our parents saying the same thing about us Boomers when we were young. Seems like the old saying "the more things change the more they stay the same" rings true here!

Doesn't every generation say that about the next lot to come along?

At least previous generations could get non-term-based employment contracts and mortgages. Is all I'm saying!

This is all true. And Gen Y won't be lazy for long because when the economy truly bottoms out... and I mean honest-to-god CRASHES... they will have to toughen up in a way that you never did. Things are going so poorly that kids who are 15 now will make your grandparents look lucky, I assure you. My grandfather worked very, very hard but he also had a union, a pension that started paying out as soon as he retired at age 62, social security and all the benefits he'll need. More importantly, he had a booming economy the likes of which the world has never seen (America between 1946 and now has thrived at a level that no nation, at any point in history, has ever known) and worked in an industry that made that kind of reward possible, one that doesn't exist anymore. That's an easier path than our kids will know.

I firmly believe that thanks to social media, you have the potential to be more informed than ever before. Organizations can update thousands of people in an instant with just one status update/tweet, rather than post flyers, make phone calls, and take to the streets.

I disagree with the article in that social media isn't making our generation lazier, it's giving them the potential to be more informed than ever. Many just choose to not use it. However, it still doesn't change the 'young person' attitude that most people my age have. Hell, even I've got it! When I'm researching potential back-up careers (for my long term career goal), I'll look at something and say 'ooo! That would be a good one! Wait...Four years of school?! No way! I want it now!'. I suppose the difference is that I know I'm not going to get everything handed on a silver platter, so I put in every ounce of effort I have. I'm not going to get into the police force expecting them to get on their knees and offer me everything. I'm going to have to work *for them*, make them want me as an employee, jump hoops for *them*.

Quite possilbly, with modern technology we have to do less and less things, as we have machines to do it for us. "Lazy" however is probably not the right word.

I say good on him. Not good on him for mooching off his mother, because that's not right in my opinion.

Good on him for choosing his own path. Why should he have to have a job? Because society says so? Just because he has a different outlook on life, doesn't mean he has the wrong one.

For the record, I do have a job, and have had since I left school.

Physically lazy. I'm a retired army guy and it's astounding the lack of fitness the young kids had.(ie endurance). Even kids who thought they were fit and could run a quick couple of miles struggled to handle a 10km route march with basic gear. 20km with full pack? forget it.

Of course 100 years ago everyone walked a lot, they had to lift and carry things without equipment and physical labour was hard and long hours. My generation weren't as fit as the previous but with training we came up to scratch. The current generation doesn't have the muscle and bone development, you can't be sedentary for 18 years then join the army and get tough in a couple of months.

I do have respect for them, but I worry about them. They do a lot of complicated stuff we never did (networked army etc). And of course with my accumulated injuries and worn out joints I can barely walk to the corner store.

As a 15 year old, I can say absolutely. The 21st centrury generation are nothing but sex crazed fiends with a spoiled sense of entitlement. It's sad too, American's grades are lower than ever. Just pure laziness.

I believe my exact quote was "You need to cut the umbilical ..." Yeah, we've had "conversations" about this.

Choosing to be a bum isn't a "path" it's a dead end. The only path is a "CAREER" path. Welfare, general assistance, SSI for things as idiotic as alcoholism or being "bi-polar" are the downfall of the lazy generation. 100 years ago you had to work DAMN hard to barely get by. Now you can hold your hand out and barely get by. Is it any wonder the world sees us as anything but fat and lazy? In 100 short years we've gone from innovators and a can-do attitude to professional pan handlers and no end of enablers.

It's really simple. If you're not a productive member of society, you're a mouth breather, using up my air.

So maybe a little back ground into what I do for a living yeah? I'm the Vocational Process Coordinator for the largest employer of folks with disabilities in the US. These are the hardest working folks you will ever meet. My job, specifically is to make sure that folks with disabilities have the opportunity to work no matter what their challenges might be. This isn't "pretend" work either. Last year we won the distributor of the year from HP. THAT is huge. Of all their vendors, we took it. My GUYS took it with all the cards supposedly stacked against them. I have a fella with Down Syndrome who has worked since he was 18 ( 26 years with us ). He turned 46 this year. Know what he talks about? Retiring at 60. He shows up every day and loves what he does. Work instills a sense of worth in a person. Sitting on your ass sucking on the government tip doesn't allow for any perspective what-so-ever. That's why you see shows with people on the "system" with xbox360,ps3,gameboy,20 inch rims, big screen tvs and live in a ramshakle with kids that are hungry. If they earned that money they would learn the value of it. And no, this isn't a racial deal. All creeds are accounted for in lazy town.

As for my gals "kid", why should he have a job? Because he hasn't moved up into the mountains to live like Grizzly Adams. That's why.
