Is this the laziest generation?

Before you answer, remember that you yourself are discussing this on the internet, just for fun, instead of building a skyscraper or a railroad or taming the wild frontier of a new continent, which is what your great-great-great-grandfather might have been doing.

Really? Shall we poke holes in this?

During that generation America was expanding rapidly and building these structures. I have to say I have not seen any skyscrapers being constructed around me all that often. As for railroads hell America hates rail transit now, we should have a high speed rail system like the rest of the civilised (yep UK style there) world but no one wants to fund it. As for frontiers do you propose he tames the wild frontier of Antarctica?

Its a different world today get over it. If you're freaking out about America "falling" get over it and learn some history. Every great civilization has its run and it looks like ours is winding down, that's just the way the world works.

+1.

I was hoping not to be the only one finding irony in reading a (primarily) leisure related internet forum thread about how lazy the next generation is because of their social media use.

To decrease the blatant hypocrisy, feel free to DO SOMETHING about the problem you perceive; engage them, impact their lives, pass on lacking skills, foster their strengths, ask them to explain how to use a torrent, etc

I feel each generation has to deal with burdens left over from the previous generation. Well let's just say we are handing our kids a big ball of ....

It goes beyond parenting, its a social virus that's infected our culture. Why do you think companies have no problem breaking the law? Because after paying the fines they still make a huge profit. Why do you think coaches give kids steroids? As a coach or a student its better to win the state championship then worry about the athletes health.

Why would a kid not want to be a "hard worker"? Because they watched their parents scrape by, killing themselves to make ends meet. Only to have it all go to gas, food, insane taxes ( especially in NJ ) mortgage on a house that is worth less then they are paying for.

I blame the adults, the ones who forced the collapse then made the bonuses. Take a look around and see what social lessons the current generation is being taught. Kids are smart, they don't have bosses, political parties, or beliefs that keep them in the dark about the real world. As adults we have a million reasons NOT to stick to our beliefs. Its about how can I make enough money, or keep our job, or appeal to the loudest group of donors.

What type of job could a 20 yr old get these days? After they pay out the taxes, the car loan, insurance, gas, uniform ( that some places make them pay for ), hair cuts, clothes, etc..... is it really worth the $8hr someone is offering? I would chose a tent also, sorry but blame the people ruining the country. Besides they are competing with unemployed adults and illegal immigrants.

Now that is the average kid, think of the kid who wanted to be a doctor then found out how much school costs, how many years they have to go to school to finish, then how much they will have to pay for insurance. What do you think they are thinking?

Every generation will have lazy people, but I feel that this US generation has a whole other reason not to join the rat race. They can see it from the outside in. And if they can stay out of it, I'm sure they will. What is the carrot at the end of the stick? At least my generation ( 30's ) had the whole " go to college and you will get a good job". Now look at it, does that advice still hold true today? OK Rant over..........

I think these judgements are premature. Not only are people 20 y/o and younger still kids (in essence for the older of that developmentally diverse age group) but they could also be very productive in ways not yet recognized be their elders.

They've definitely lowered the bar.

I have an 11 year old nephew, and every time I see him I talk to him about school and what he's learning and I'm always amazed how ignorant he is in a lot of subjects (even though he's an A and B student). No Child Left Behind definitely ****ed our education system.

Sad but true. American high schools produce more BS than American farms.

As a 15 year old, I can say absolutely. The 21st centrury generation are nothing but sex crazed fiends with a spoiled sense of entitlement.

Actually, that's just what being 15 is like. Don't worry, you'll grow out of it (a little).

If you read my post you can see that I have been doing just that for many years.

You have a point to make I trust?

Mine is simple. They need to WANT to work. You cannot MAKE them work unless they are enslaved or incarcerated. You can talk to people until you're blue in the face. IT wont change them unless THEY are willing/want to change. That, my friend is 1st year behaviorism. I'm about 5 years past that course. . .

One of the first things an effective lazy person does is develop healthy cynicism of their ability to have an impact.

as a member of the generation being discussed I will say that I'm incredibly lazy but at the same time I don't shy away from hard work if it's necessary or it's for something I want. Which is, I think, true of most people if hard work is not needed or wouldn't be beneficial in getting something we want then what's the point other than to torture yourself?

That's me. An effective lazy person.

They say necessity is the mother of invention but I think it's laziness. Who would have invented man's bet friend, the remote, if people weren't lazy.

My dad always said "give the hardest job you've got to the laziest man you've got and he'll figure out the easiest way to do it.". It's what I do and my son is showing signs of this trait as well. Whenever I give him a job he wants to invent a robot to do it.

I find a lot of stories here are told of people that are exceptionally lazy, IE, they never really had the ability to make themselves otherwise. I have a friend who's dad left the home (became a convict), and his mom, while trying to take care of him, more or less the majority of the time was working. What happened? Of course the guy's work ethic deteriorated, he ended up mentally ill (depression, bipolar) because he had no foundation of keeping persistence towards goals. Every project I've seen him take up he's put down for some simple reason. That something got in his way.

Now, as far as the rest of the population in "my generation", ......I think these years its particularly easy to be mistaken as lazy because most college grads have done the time and put in the energy to receive no reward for their hard work. It obviously creates insubordination where-ever they are, whether it be in the work place or elsewhere.

Simple question: If you were working towards a goal feeling you were never making progress, would you remain motivated?

This is a very demotivational time for most young American citizens, I can say that much.

Impact, positively, the lives of hundreds of folk then speak to me of armchair diagnosis.

Thinly veiled insults are beneath civil discussion. If you dislike my thoughts, then ignore them and read on in the thread. Keep the insults to yourself please.
