Is this true? Only open strings on metal?

It looks like low-key comedy to me.

Even if he's serious or trolling, I can't imagine any harm can be done. He's enjoying himself, and anybody who wants to take their playing seriously will move beyond his advice in short order.

I came across this video and in the video he says that you can play only open strings for metal? I'm not sure if i understood correctly. On his covers he only plays open strings and doesn't do any fretting. As someone that doesn't even play yet, is this correct? I've never seen this before.

I may have misunderstood "that you can play only open strings" as "you are only allowed to play open strings" while you probably meant "you can get by/away with only playing open strings"...

I'm looking into buying a bass for years i'll be honest, and i do a lot of research but i honestly didn't know if you could just play the root note like the guy said and be able to get away with it. I really don't want to come across as a troll, but i guess i could've used more common sense and realized that i never seen someone playing just one open string during a whole song. I'm sorry about that.
Anyways this whole thing blew up too much, the dude in the videos even made a video talking poopie about me because i commented "why don't you fret any notes" which was a serious question btw. Oh well, don't feed the know it all musician on youtube with real questions they're too afraid to answear. Lesson learned

There are one note songs out there...

Not to mention the famous One Note Samba:

Although you should notice in these songs that there are usually chord changes under the monotonic lead (which itself usually strays from its assigned note rather than being ruthlessly stuck on it) because they have to keep it interesting, so if you're playing root notes you'll probably still have to move your fretting hand a little

Hey guys so i'm saving money for my first bass and I've been looking at bass technic videos and other videos about bass. I came across this video and in the video he says that you can play only open strings for metal? I'm not sure if i understood correctly. Thank you guys.

there is no money past the zero fret

Maybe take this away, as the lesson learned :

If you'd just bought any cheap bass 3 years ago, you'd be so far beyond questions / concerns like this, and have a considerable degree of practical learning, and playing experience under your belt.

Doing all the research, and learning everything on paper in advance, isn't going to mean you can just pick up the instrument and play like you've been doing it for years.

You could have spent those years playing for years.

It's time to 5h1t, or get off the pot.

Your current predicament is less productive than being in a band that rehearses every week, for years, saying that you won't gig until you've written a set of absolutely killer songs, that you play perfectly - and you keep adding new material, and dropping older songs : you'll never get out off the starting blocks.

Just buy a cheap bass, and get started. Now.
