Is this true? Only open strings on metal?

I know this guy is looking for controversy with his videos but just to clarify: I love the open drop D on Tools Schism. You know why it’s so great? Because it’s is a strong contrast to all the fretted notes from 3rd to 17th frets.

Who is your favourite band? Watch the bass player and see if he frets (spoiler: he does).

Do you want to be lazy and crap just for the sake of being on stage or do you want to be able to actually play an instrument?

Oh man I wish it worked that way...

OP-I’m not going to pile on what others have already said other than to say that if it were that easy you’d probably see a lot more people playing bass...

Plenty of good virtual lessons and tabs out there to help you learn on your own (or even better find an in-person instructor)...I am still pretty new, but found taking a few lessons last Fall helpful as it helped me better understand the fretboard...

This site might help you...I haven’t taken his full course, but from watching some of his free online videos I feel like this might be a good resource for you if you’re just starting out: Learn How to Play Bass — Badass Bass Lessons

Best of luck on your journey...

Thanks! \m/

Thank you so much! I will try my best! It's kind of hard to find a bass teacher where i live but i really wanted to have some bass lessons. Maybe i'll try to find a zoom teacher ahahahha
And i love bassbuzz! I always watch his and SBL videos.

ok so first off, i think you found some of the hotter garbage on the internet and you can promptly unlearn everything in that video. second, what kind of metal are you into? there’s a lot of different ways to be a great metal bass player. a lot of nu metal and beat down hardcore stuff gravitates more toward really hammering that low string with some accent notes here and there, and if that’s your thing, go party.

but then there’s players like Mike Flores from Origin or Steve DiGiorgio from Death that will make your head explode.

Well i listen to a lot of different types of metal, some of my favorite bassists are Steve DiGiorgio, Nolly Getgood, Ryan Martinie, Daiki (from a japanese deathcore band) and IKUO (from another japanese band).

there it is.jpe

Hey guys so i'm saving money for my first bass and I've been looking at bass technic videos and other videos about bass. I came across this video and in the video he says that you can play only open strings for metal? I'm not sure if i understood correctly. On his covers he only plays open strings and doesn't do any fretting. As someone that doesn't even play yet, is this correct? I've never seen this before.

Thank you guys.

Methinks this is a troll. 3. Years. Later. Starter gear

This is exactly why I play a double neck 8 string, one tuned to E major scale, the other E minor. Then I just capo it for key changes. Leaves my left hand free for doing other stuff like throwing up devil horns or typing posts on TB.

This, btw, is #28 on the 30 ways to play bass list.

First, someone should tell him to blow his knows before making a video. Furthermore, saying “Ya know” more then 10 times in a 2m 30s is unacceptable.

He is right about being different ways of playing bass or even the same song/bassline and there is no wrong way if it sounds good.

Then there’s the next video where he plays Metallica’s “Seek and Destroy” I guess? That’s just wrong.

:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

I'll give him that, he is entertaining...

You and many of the commentators here should probably need to listen to him again. He never said "You should only play open strings for metal". And the second video, he frets the other note.

This is what he said if you turn on close caption.

I play jazz and upright bass and surprise, to check my intonation - I play a lot of open strings also.

Are you really defending this moron?

Welcome to TB
As most people here have already told you no not true, you can play some songs with open string, but the meat and potato of a Metal song is the half step that is what gives you the tension. It is what separates metal from a say a rock song. Also you need muting, another important technique. I know that is a lot of information, but you will learn this as you progress.
If you are going to do it correctly you need to fret the notes. I also would suggest that you need to start out with the basics. You need scales under your fingers, before trying to play some metal bass lines. Find yourself a good teacher.
