Well, if you listen through his technique (whether you like it or not), I hear great growly tone under there, with fingers and pick.

It might sound cleaner with some of us playing it, but a little clank? Not the end of the world. Go listen to some iconic isolated bass tracks.

I totally agree with everything you wrote. And when I play with a pick I want some clank.
 
back in the early 80's i had gas for one of those...used to go to the local music store a couple times a week to drool on it...the price was $699 i think and i couldn't swing it but i bought a late 60's fender p bass from an old lady for $400....now i look back and wish i'd worked harder and got that victory....i still want one!
