I think it must be a result of the obsession with how much basses weight.
It is an effective way to get rid of some, more so than ultra light hardware I'd say.
On a different note I actually liked the holed J bass, well beside the side dot (holes) thing on the neck, this on the other hand truly looks horrible.
It is becoming a trend. Just wait for the big names like Marcus or Victor to catch up on it.
