This reminds me a bit of the late 1990s and early 2000s when the large ported snare drum fad was all the rage with nu-metal drummers. It was so silly. These guys would drill several ports, anywhere from 2" to 6" in diameter, all over their snare drum shells.

I don't uderstand why they have to bore holes all the way through.
Just bore them 3/4 of 7/8 of the way from the back.
The front will look normal.
Now if the bass balances well after that.
Good!
But if it dives,now you got a problem.

I wouldn't have one BUT different does not mean bad, it's just different. It's just a shock to alot of us because we have a preference for the standard. Non-standard is okay- some people like it.
What about the many threads on TB about strange or different looking basses, anything wrong with those ???

Well it is just object. Nothing sacred and event then ...
My only problem is it is done without any plan or aestetic ... it seems they just drill where it wouldn't be a problem ( like avoiding the pickup cavity or electronic cavity ).

It's so light that even though it kind of wanted to neck dive without a strap and played sitting down, who cares? It sounded excellent and on a decent strap it probably wouldn't dive at all.
The pic (which I lifted from the GTG thread) doesn't do it justice, Chris is a genuinely world class luthier. I'd guess that it's under 6 lbs., but someone on the Stambaugh Club thread would probably know. It was Chris' personal instrument IIRC. Here's a closeup of the cutaway detailing:

In the cycling world you call the person responsible for this a weight weenie. These can't weigh that much compared to some '70s ash P basses I've played. Get a wider strap, suck it up and keep your dignity!
