It can't be... another hole in one.

I can't believe that there's been two threads about basses with holes in them.... and what is the first result when i open Trade Me (the NZ version of Ebay) today......... what is happening?

It really ‘cuts through’ the mix!

What kind of person does this? It's like buying a new car and tearing the doors off.

See, here's the thing. That's an inexpensive (likely) Yamaha bass. It's not as though we're seeing pics of a '52 Fender with holes in it.

So, to take your car analogy to the next level.....

This is akin to seeing the "doors torn off" of a '93 Nissan Sentra. SO WHAT! If they tear the doors off of a vintage Ferrari, gimme a call. Until then, nutn to see here. Modding (or even destroying) ordinary everyday basses (or any other inanimate object for that matter) is just no big deal to me. Nobody cries when someone spraypaints a set of import Pearl drums. Nobody freaks out when a 90s Charvel guitar gets a scalloped fretboard. This is just not a big deal at all.

Having a little fun aside, I think it’s more that people are asking what’s the point of doing that. All it’s likely to accomplish is increase the likelihood and severity of neck dive. And I doubt anyone will seriously try to suggest neck dive is a good thing.

It's bound to be weight loss. But, yeah, I can see that creating other issues. That being said, many here seem to "mourn the loss" of ordinary basses that get hacked up by.... (shall we say) "creative"..... people. :D

Yeah. I hear you. My attitude is if it’s still an in production instrument, and it’s your bass, go do whatever you want.

Just don’t show it to me. :p

Personally, I think bass players tend to be more function oriented than a lot of other musicians when it come to their instruments. While we like our bling just as much as the next guy, we tend to be less accepting of silliness that serves no useful purpose. And since there’s rules here against personal attacks or calling an instrument “ugly” joking around is the only permissible alternative to saying: “You have to be an absolutely clueless moron to screw up your bass doing that - and man! does that ever look hideous.”

I doubt anybody’s being serious here. ;)
