I wonder about it alright, just in a different sense than neck dive.

If it sounds good, holes can be ok. Is the OP example a good representation of the need to shed weight? I dont think so, but then again perhaps the more I see them, the more accustomed my eyes will get.

The baby boomers are getting long in the tooth and don't want the weight anymore. I just picked up a Ubass and it's great.

Look for Ibanez to make chambered basses on the cheap soon.

Or, why not attach everything -- pickups included -- to the pickguard and, except for some wood to anchor the bridge/tailpiece, drill/route out the entire back? That would remove about as much weight as it is possible to remove and, with a custom rear pickguard to bookend with the standard 'guard, the bass still would look normal.
