It's Riddle Time!

This next one is death:

What English word is nine letters long, and can remain an English word at each step as you remove one letter at a time, right down to a single letter. List the letter you remove each time and the words that result at each step.

Remember, Google in this comp is a huuuge nono.

I assume there's a bunch of answers to this, but this is what I came up with

Here's a cool little game

The rules are as follows. Only adults can operate the ferry. The mother can't leave the father alone with either of the 2 girls. The father can't leave the mother alone with either of the 2 boys. The cop can't leave the criminal with anyone.

But you can kinda figure this out as you go.

I did it in 17 moves, I don't think it can be done in any fewer.
 
One more, and then I'll leave you all in peace to figure them out.

Three men spend the night at a hotel. They pay for a $30 room, each giving $10 for their share. When they go to their room, however, the manager realizes that the room is on sale for $25, and gives $5 to the bagboy to return to the men. The bagboy goes to give back the five dollars, and when he does, the men take it, but give the bagboy $2 as a tip, thereby keeping one dollar each for themselves. However, one of the men is disturbed, remarking, "Hey, we each spent 9 dollars just now, since we got one back, which means $27 total, right? Plus the $2 we gave the bagboy, that's only $29! Where's the extra dollar?"

We did this in math class. Our teacher told us there is no answer, its simply a problem that breaks the rules.

Was she wrong?
 
I don't what im looking for in that one but 2b cannot = b if b = a.

but 2b can = 2a which gets us back to the first equation.


EDIT; after getting out a pencil this is what I've come up with.

a^2 - b^2 cannot = ab - b^2
it can equal (a+b)(a-b) and I'm pretty sure that is all it can equall.
Still, I don't know if thats what you're looking for.
 
The Farmer's Bequest
The lawyer solemnly broke the seal on the will of the late farmer Brown. Seated at the table with him were the farmer's three sons, Tom, Dick, Harry, and their neighbor, farmer Green. The lawyer opened the folded paper, and began to read: "I bequeath my seventeen cows to my three sons, to be divided as follows: one half of the cows to my eldest, Tom; one third of the cows to Dick; and one ninth of the cows to my youngest, Harry."
The lawyer put down the will, took out a pencil, and did some rapid figuring on a pad. Then he said, "That means that Tom gets 8 1/2 cows, Dick gets 5 2/3 cows, and Harry gets 1 8/9 cows." He smiled, very pleased with himself for being so learned and clever.
"You may be very good in arithmetic," Tom said somewhat sourly, "but it is obvious you don't know anything about farming. Half of a cow is half of a dead cow, and dead cows don't give any milk."
"His arithmetic is no good either," said Harry. "If you add 8 1/2, 5 2/3, and 1 8/9, the sum is only 16 1/18." The three sons glared suspiciously at the lawyer, wondering if he was trying to cheat them out of 17/18 of a cow. The lawyer looked helplessy toward farmer Green, and shrugged his shoulders.
Farmer Green stroked his beard calmly, and said, "Keep your tempers, boys. I know how you can divide the cows as your father wished, without killing any cows, and with no pieces of cows left over. Just wait here while I go to my barn." When he returned from his barn, he showed them how the will could be carried out, to the sons' satisfaction and the lawyer's great relief. Haw was it done?

1/2 + 1/3 + 1/9 = 9/18 + 6/18 + 2/18 = 17/18

That's why it didn't add up right...

My guess is that farmer Green loans them another cow, so that Tom gets 9 (1/2 of 18), Dick gets 6 (1/3 of 18), and Harry gets 2 (1/9 of 18). Since there's still one cow left over, farmer Green takes his cow back and nobody has any objection since it's bloody well close enough. :D

everyone should pick this one quick... with all the mathematical genius in this thread

I've usually seen this written with another step between the 3rd and 4th steps: (a+b)(a-b)=b(a-b) and then you divide by (a-b) to cancel both sides and get (a+b)=b

That's where the error is, if a=b like you show in the first step then dividing by (a-b) is the same as dividing by 0.
