Right? They're pretty cheap these days, particularly for elderly people who could possibly be on fixed incomes...

At age 70 soon to be 71, a qualified pensioner on a fixed income, primarily living on social security, I have an iPad pro 12.9" in an Otterbox Defender, an AirTurn blue tooth page tuner, as well as a stand with a Manus iPad holder. It's called having the tools of the trade.

I suppose those you are addressing are all playing instruments and amps found in a salvage yard?

All I'd say is for me, I would NEVER go on a bandstand with those things unless it was a real, chart gig. What they're doing is their business.

So maybe a discrete placement of a music stand for one player would be OK, but what is this?
I was checking the Facebook page of a lodge I play at with my duo and where I have played with a band for many years and I see this. What a stage presence. Looks like they have maybe one instrumentalist, probably backing tracks. Plus all those wires? Looks like a mess. Though the lodge has adequate stage lights on the ceiling, they put those floor lights to liven up the show I guess. Their promo group photo shows 5 members. A musician posted a comment "music stands, really"
They are playing a few miles away in week or so, I might check it out.

Just wanted to note that I - WAYYYY back on page 1 - was criticizing the OP and the pile-on-ers for bashing this group, not the group themselves. They are alive, making music, and sharing it with others. Anyone who feels the need to nitpick the manner in which they do that (as long as it's legal....) can go pound sand.

Relax. It's just a group of people showing the world that they are inexperienced. We all started somewhere. Here is the problem with a lot of things - it's no longer acceptable to point out to people where they could improve their stage presence, performance level, etc.

I called them pikers because that is what they are showing to the world. If they want to be taken seriously as professionals, they can present themselves like professionals. It is not hard.

YES!!!!! +1,000. For the 30-plus years I have been going to hear them the small jazz ensembles at the University I used to work at invariably ALL read from a version of the Real Book and never acknowledged or even made eye contact with their audience. It was like two different universes. If I heard a piece I liked I could never request it at another performance because the band never announced it.

I blame this sort of dumbassery on the professors of the jazz program, and there have been several of those over the years.

While I can agree with some of your post, like playing extemporaneous free form jazz for instance, or solos over set chord sequences, you make sense.

But have you ever heard the expression "Everybody on the same page"? As you well know, when you get into larger ensembles playing music that is more intertwined and a lot less repetitive than your basic 1-4-5 progression over and over again, reading off charts is a pretty good idea.

The main reason it is used is it speeds up group learning significantly. Secondly, music gives you a track to follow that greatly reduces the amount of "Clams" tossed to the audience. And finally, playing 800 to 1,000+ linear notes in a piece and playing them correctly every time out multiplied by how many players using their own interpretation is a recipe for disaster.

As for the subject matter of the original post, this band of weekenders probably could get by without the stands.

I didn't wanna be there, yet.
But some crap came along and well, here I am.

See if this last surgery will help. So far not, but I need to give it some time.

The standard seems to have evolved around this issue. In small combo music, it never used to be OK to use music stands at gigs. These days I often play with dudes who have been in these bands for years and they are still using iPads and stands.

Big band and orchestral music is different, as that music is usually precisely charted and has to be played the same way every time.

In a club band, chances are what's on those music stands is chord changes and format notes. Learn the tunes - for one thing you simply can't play within them when you're following notes the whole way. You have to understand the song as much as you have to know it.

If you're a sub, rules don't apply. You can use a music stand, though please position it low and discreet.

I had a walker on stage…40 years ago. It had been used by my grandmother, but as she had moved on, I employed it as a keyboard stand during the time I added synth bass to my instrumental toolbox. Since I spent all my money on getting a Sequential Circuits Pro-One(they weren't cheap), I had virtually no money left over for something to put it on. I had a lightbulb moment, it drew some laughs but also some compliments for ingenuity. Shoulda kept the synth(those things fetch stupid money now). Maybe even the walker, but if I ever get that bad off, gigging would be the last thing on my mind.
