No, but performing music has absolutely everything to do with it. Honestly what I get from this thread is: constructive criticism is never ok, and it's especially not ok if the subjects happen to be over a certain age, even if said constructive criticism has nothing to do with their age. It's ridiculous. How old are you people? I'm 53. When I was growing up, in art class and music class, we would literally take entire sessions to critique one another's performance, work and presentation. Being able to receive said criticism is one of the most important skills an artist can have. And I am willing to bet that this group of musicians doesn't need y'all defending them. Lastly, to be clear, NO ONE SAID MUSIC STANDS ARE "BAD." The criticism was that they are in front of their faces. Like @LBS-bass, I am out.

"Constructive criticism"?? Here, here's some: a quartet of septuagenarians need music stands in order to perform their music. The venue sees no issue with it, and apparently the audience is there - else the venue would see issue with it. Making fun of them on a web forum for their supposed unprofessionalism does them no good, and shows the folks making fun of them to be mean-spirited a-wholes. Can you receive said criticism?

I plan to check them out and talk to them. Hear what they sound like and see why they need all that wiring for one instrumentalist and a few microphones. Will report back.

It would be interesting to know what the event is about and who their intended audience is. (eg. fundraiser)

I live in a 55+ community (Sun City) but at 61, I'm on the young end of the demographic here. The photo in the OP looks very similar to some of the bands around here, comprised of residents in their 70's, 80's and 90's. No, they're not hip to technology or fashion or showmanship, but they're doing something they enjoy and their audiences are their peers and tend to have a great time. More power to them. I hope I'm still playing in 10, 20, 30 years, even if some people snicker at how uncool I am.

Neither reference was to a band, they are both songs. Peaches En Regalia by Frank Zappa. I can only lead a horse to water...

This, exactly, which is why it would be interesting to know who the audience is. After all the back and fourth here, I'd bet it'll be folks in the bands demographic, and they'll have a great time regardless of the music stands...

Apparently you are more interested in arguing than reading. I can count like 10 posts where people have said they have no problem with music stands. They should just be lower.

Did you speak with the venue? How do you know there was an audience there? Are you Creskin??

Sure, maybe they are having a great time. No one claimed they weren't. NO ONE KNOWS. But it couldn't hurt to lower those music stands. That's literally all most of "us" are saying.

I'll go hunt through these 11 pages and find and read all your posts if you do the same for mine. Otherwise, let's just trust each other here. I read your past few. I've got no beef with you, or really anyone, but I do think it's on you to define what's "all negative" before casting such a wide net. I repeat: learning and growing from an example is not negative. It's part and parcel of getting better. OTOH, easy jokes about someone's age are negative, unnecessary and hurtful.

Perhaps they should display some Kandinsky paintings on the back side of those stands. Give the audience something to look at.

I've got no beef with you, or really anyone, but I do think it's on you to define what's "all negative" before casting such a wide net. I repeat: learning and growing from an example is not negative. It's part and parcel of getting better. OTOH, easy jokes about someone's age are negative, unnecessary and hurtful.

I guess I'm referring to the back and negativity amongst the respondents here, you were bowing out at one point over it. That's all.
I try, not always succeed, to take a positive tack on things. After all, I play bass for fun. Period. If it's not fun I move on.
Also, I tend to get a bit protective of the elderly and think it's great when they keep doing what they love and don't just give up when things become more challenging. I've seen that and it's sad.

You got me - I did intend to bow out and I wasn't able to, lol. The elderly thing is odd to me - the OP said nothing about it and then the rest of the thread became like a Rorschach test for how each person views older people. To me it has nothing to do with it, unless it does. For example, if we knew that these folks had to have the charts really close due to poor eyesight, that's fine. But it looks like one person just set them all up at the same height and no one bothered adjusting them. It's an easy thing to fix, and something we can all learn from. To me, that's just "one to grow on," and nothing to do with age. I want nothing to do with ageism, it's silly.
