It's too bad Peavey gets ZERO respect.

I've been a member here for a while, and have been playing bass for about a year. I have also played guitar for the better part of 25 years, about 20 in bars and clubs. Over that time, I've played in so many bands it would be difficult to name them all, and seen/competed with many more. Although Fender Ric, Yamaha and Ibanez are pretty common around here(or were in my day), by far the most prevelant bass and/or bass rig around is Peavey. I literally cannot count the number of bassists with either Peavey basses or Peavey rigs. Yet on a bass forum with so large a membership, Peavey is constantly slammed. I don't get it.
What prompted this thread was a post on another thread about Musicians Friend's deal of the Day. The last comment I read on the subject was "Too bad it's a Peavey."
I just can't fathom it. Now to be fair, i don't own any Peavey bass gear, although I own plenty of PA and a guitar amp with their name on it. One of the most popular guitar amps around this area is the dead simple but utterly reliable Bandit 112. For 20+ years, Peavey has been rock solid not only at gig after gig, but in delivering great tone, especially on the low end of the scale. I will never understand why they get so little respect. I'm proud of the Peavey gear I own. Sonically, I'd put it up against anything out there in it's range(I wouldn't use it other wise), and NOBODY builds reliability better than Peavey. You can drop kick Peavey gear across the stage, pick it up, plug it in, and get on with the show.
As far as bass gear goes, I think of 3 brands; Fender, Ampeg and, yes, Peavey. There are just as many(or more) Peavey rigs in use than the other two combined, yet they still get no respect. Go figger.

in the words of steve albini "the thing about peavy equtment is it always works, it never sounds that good but it always works, you can find something peavy at the bottom of a lake and dry it off and it will work like it came out the factory. theres a upper limitation for anything peavey"

altho i have a milestone III and i love it to bits

I'm thinking of getting a Peavey bass and a majority of the responses to my thread said your better off buying something else. I too cannot understand the Peavey hate. It's almost as bad as the Sqiuer hate.

That surprises me. Every thread I've seen focused on Peavey basses has been full of praise.

What Peavey bass were you thinking of buying?

It's the Millennium BXP 4-string. Most people were saying don't buy it new, and look for the American made bass not the oversees made one that their selling now. Etc, etc.

They're not slamming Peavey. They're giving you solid advice. The Chinese-made BXP models aren't representative of the best of Peavey. Same with Chinese-made Fenders vs. US-made Fenders

For the money you'd pay for a new BXP, you can find a better, used US-made Peavey. Go to ebay and look what's available for $239 in the Peavey line. US Foundations, Dynabasses, T-40's - all better basses than the Chinese-made BXP models.

I was working in a guitar shop when Peavy came out, the general consenses was they were solid roadworthy amps but most guys including me thought they were muddy sounding. In regards to the T- series guitar/basses a few guy played them but the problem there was that they are so damm heavy. Right now I don't think they get any more criticism than other brands

Ebay does have some really nice Peavey basses on there. I only prefer passive basses and most of the basses for sale are active, so that really limits my choices.

I don't see the Peavey slamming going on. In fact, I joined TB after lurking for a while in the Basses and the Classifieds boards, and due to the praise the Cirrus received and the good deal I found, I bought one having never seen a Cirrus in person. Thanks to the good advice on here, I got a bass that I really really enjoy.

I witness more Peavey slamming going on from people I know who play guitar and worship at the altar of Gibson or ESP or Fender.

I see a lot of love around here for Peavey.

Is my Peavey my best-playing or best-sounding bass? No, though it is pretty comfy and does sound good (now). Has a single thing on it ever broken? Hell no.

Also, my PA is Peavey. It weighs a ton and is really old, but has put up with a lot and has kept on running fine. My guitarist's rig is Peavey, sounds great, works fine despite being really old and beat up, and is insanely loud.

I've been using Peavey since the mid 70's when my neighbor and I started a band in my folks basement. I outfitted my bandroom over the last couple of years with Peavey gear not only because of the sound, but also reliability. Very important when buying used from Ebay.

X8 ;)
