Anyone have the new Aguilar Split coils yet? I was VERY impressed with their jazz bass 5-string single coil set, the 60's version

I'm waiting for a review as well .I wonder what the difference is btwn 60 and 70 version because I thought it was the pickup placement that made the sound distinct in a j bass.....

Apparently the 70s pups were a different wind/wire and were what we would call more scooped sounding ... I think [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
The 60s I think are supposed to be a more faithful representation of that era. From personal experience with the 5string 60s set (lol 60s 5string) I thought they sounded a bit heavier on the lows which made the low mids sound really sweet. I preferred them to the stock MIA pups (2000 model)

Aguilar AG 4J-70 Jazz Bass Pickups

Took out the stock pup's from my Highway 1 Jazz and replaced with 4J-70's. Got rid of the ridiculous Greasebucket nonsense too. Tone: Much improved. Lows and much more pronounced and fatter. This is very apparent when I drop my E to low D. Volume: Very balanced up and down the fretboard. No more "impulse" notes in the upper registers. Less noise too. Quality: Top notch wiring. Note: When I was dismantling the HWY1, a ground wire and tone wire broke loose from crappy soldering.
Overall sound: Not the Jaco 60's sound. A solid round tone that cuts through the mix.

So, now that I have played a couple of gigs with my new pickups I thought I would make a slightly more thorough review of the DELANO JMVC 4 FE/M2

Firstly, it took me a few days to get over the shock of how different they sounded compared to the CS 60s pups that came stock in my j bass.
Now that I have gotten over that shock, I LOVE these pups. They are definitely low-mids focused with a slight roll off on the super high and clacky frequencies. For example when slapping, the highest frequency I can hear when I pop a high note is lower than the highest frequency with the CS 60s. To me, this makes the sound much more enjoyable, pleasant, and in some ways polite. Especially while playing over the neck pup.
However, these pickups can also sound huge, growly, and in your face. All it takes is plucking over the bridge with some attitude and the growl really comes out.

I will say this: I have never felt my bass so present in the mix as it has been the past few gigs with these new pups.
They really do sound just how they look: huge, round, hard-to-ignore.

I definitely recommend these highly. I imagine they would sound phenomenal in a studio setting too. Be warned, however, that it will greatly change the j bass tone. IMO it's a nice change.

thinking about buying and installing jmvc's in my warwick thumb nt(aguilar obp3 already installed).
what music you've played on gigs? I'm playing some metalcore/hardcore stuff and want to change my stock active MEC's

I play in an original band that is like Rush and Dream Theater type prog rock. Then also play in a funk band, jazz band, and wedding band (doing top 40 stuff)

It works great for all those applications. PM me if u have more questions

I'm going to replace the pickups in a bass I just bought, but it has both P and J pickups. I'm going to get Quarter Pound SPB-3 to replace my P pickups, but I was wondering what would work well for a single J pickup?

I would mainly be playing punk style music, but I would like to be able to transition into a more indie style of music as well. Would the Quarter Pound J pickup be worth it for this, or is there something better suited?

Since you're already going with the Quarter Pound P, why not the Quarter Pound for the J slot too? I put Quarter Pounds in my Jazz and love them, so I've been thinking of getting the Quarter Pounders for my P too.

The question I have is do they hum cancel?

Yea this is my main idea, its always good to hear second opinions though.

The Quarter Pound P have hum canceling.

The Jazz QP'sare single coils, so I do get a little hum when I'm not running both pickups on full. That's okay though, I wanted single coils... wanted to stay as close to the original Jazz tone of the bass as I could and still beef up the sound.

The Fralin split coil pickups have great tonal characteristics...the tone is heading in the direction of a Dimarzio Model J but with a more focused low/low-mid presence. Great for rock, classic rock, Motown, blues. They also have very good output, maybe even a little much depending on your amp's gain setting.

Definitely very nice, with some added thump.

But my favorite...after using many J pickups are the ones that came on my Select Jazz...man...so nice. Good low end, but can still get the growl. The highs are not harsh, so it has a nice pop when one slaps...I'm just a terrible slap bassist, but am aware of a nice tone...mine is a dexterity issue. :D

The classic stacks are also a very nice noiseless pickup, that while
they don't have the same output as the fralins, I do believe the tone is closer to that of a traditional single coil.

This is mostly what I'm worried about for the J pickup. Is the hum that noticeable (I would probably want to use this bass for recording as well)?

Hi there,

I'm new to your club so I have no previous knowledge of what has been discussed here in the past.

I was wondering if any one here had or has any experience with the Aguilar J or P style pickups?

Best regards,
Sbabbaro.

I love my 5J-60 set. Justin Meldal-Johnsen sold me on them.

I've been on the hunt for aggressive, noiseless pickups for my Fender US Dlx J. The SCNs that I have are okay, better than the Nordstrands that I tried, but the bass still lacks the aggression.

Didn't know if anyone has swapped the SCNs for the 5J-HC set, but if so, I'd like to hear some thoughts.
Or even how they sound by comparison.

I have Sadowsky pickups in a Squire and they could punch through a brick wall... but there are no Dimarzio/Sadowsky pickups in Fender V size.

Have you asked Aguilar? I'm sure they'd describe them for you.
