"J" pickups discussion and comparisons.

They are relatively new, but I figure at least one person on here has a set. I know that posting in this particular thread may not scream out to the owners of that specific pickup... but I didn't want to get in trouble for starting ANOTHER J pickup thread.
:hiding:
I emailed Aguilar, let's see what they have to say.
If all else fails, I guess I have to pony up the dough and give a review on my own.

Yah, just flat out ask the guy. I've learned more stuff from just getting on the phone than any other way.

trust me iv tried

i need a set for my 4 banger that has the bright growl, almost throaty like the bass i posted in the video above.

i have a pair of Seymour quarter pounders in my 5 string and it scooped the heck out of my mids.

Hi Adam,

Thank you for writing and for using Aguilar gear!

We actually have a new Fender Jazz V here that we put the AG 5J-HC pickups into!

The DC resistance for them would be: 11.2k for Bridge and 10.95 for neck pickup.

You will certainly get a nice amount of snap and more presence to the tone for sure. I think you are also going to get ‘more’ of everything, deeper lows, smooth treble and very articulate mids.

I hope this is helpful to you but please let me know if I can assist further.

Kind regards,

--Marco

It's nice when a company cares enough about their product to respond in less than 1 business day, that's quite refreshing.

... But it's the company selling the pickups, so I still feel like a TB'er would give me the 100% unbiased opinion.
And it's starting to sound like I should be the TB'er to test the waters, since they haven't quite made the rounds here yet.
Boo hoo... I have to buy more bass stuff :D

What up A

I cannot say myself, but I just saw a buddy of mine that's not a TB-er and He built a warmoth with these pickups and was quite happy with them.
He did not get into tonal description like we do on here...but He is a Rock/R&B/Blues (working many type of player) if that helps.

He only choose them because He like Aguliar :hiding:

Cheers

Definitely promising news, I appreciate the heads up.
And definitely nothing wrong about liking Aguilar... I can't say that's not a reason that drew me to them as well. I've loved my Aguilar goodies over the years, they make a great product.

I'm pretty interested in these split coil aggy's as well. Given the description from the aggy rep, they seem to be quite similar to the Nordstrand nj4se's that I put into an MIM j bass a while back. Outstanding pickups that ooze beautiful jazz tone and can certainly growl.
I recently picked up a Fender jazz 24 which came stock w/ duncan quarter pounders, and aside from the annoying hum, I was less than impressed. Over the weekend, I put in a pair of Dimarzio ultra J's that I stumbled upon. Very scooped sound with no low mids at all and too much high end emphasis. So I just don't know that a "mid-priced" pickup will quite cut it. I'm primarily looking at either the AG 4j-hc's or the nordy nj4sv's.

I'm a fan of the Nordy NJ4 pickups...great warm tone, if you're into single coil pickups.
The SD Antiquity II are also very nice but don't have as much low mids presence as the NJ4.

I had the NJ5SF (Split coil Fender 5 size) and they were nice, but lower output than the SCNs and the $175 used set wasn't quite worth the upgrade over stock. So I went back to stock.

The tone of the Sadowsky HC or Dimarzio UJ is what I'd love to have in this bass... but they don't come in Fender V size. So essentially, I'm hoping that the AG 5J-HC is akin to the Sadowsky/Dimarzio tone and will fix what ails me.

But I definitely don't want to spend $200 to find out that they sound like the Nordys, you know?

I've been on the hunt for aggressive, noiseless pickups for my Fender US Dlx J. The SCNs that I have are okay, better than the Nordstrands that I tried, but the bass still lacks the aggression.

Didn't know if anyone has swapped the SCNs for the 5J-HC set, but if so, I'd like to hear some thoughts.
Or even how they sound by comparison.

I have Sadowsky pickups in a Squire and they could punch through a brick wall... but there are no Dimarzio/Sadowsky pickups in Fender V size.

Ever give the Fralins a try...good in the lower mids...more clarity than Model J, but similar...IMO at least.

I've heard nothing but compliments on the antiquity II's. I just can't deal with the hum. I just wish the nordys weren't so costly. An eventual mod will be an OBP-3, and I understand that Nordys work just as well with it as the aggys. I'm so torn between the two that it may just come down to a coin toss!

Wow!! I made it all the way through. About 6 hours (bass in hand, though; I kept jamming with the clips:))

Great thread, but light on 5 string info. I just picked up a used 2012 MIM Jazz V and was researching PUs. Have Fralins in my Jazz 4 and love them, but thought I would go hum cancelling for the 5. Dimarzio doesn't build a pickup for Fender 5s, and I can't see spending $230 (as step 1) to mod a $400 bass. I'm leaning to American Standard 5s ($39 a pop), or maybe SD QPs (too modern, I think; blues and southern rock mostly,me) or maybe SD SJ5s- 67/70, which seem to be getting phased out.

More confused than ever. Not really expecting advice, just venting.:atoz:

Greetings from Greece everyone.I bought a used 1999 Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe V active(mexican model) and I'm looking for to replace the pickups because the sound especially in the low B and E strings lacks deep end and punch.I had the bass adjusted and still no result.Any recommendations? The sound I'm looking for is deep end, punchy and growl sound if that's possible!

Well, here's what I've found for Fender V sized (3.9" and 4.1" wide pickup sets):

Seymour Duncan QP (and Duncan Designed in Squier Basses)
Fender SCN, Noiseless, N3, and Standard
Nordstrand NJ5F(s)
Aguilar AG 5J-HC, 5J-70, 5J-60
Delano (various)
Lindy Fralin
Aero
Lakland/Hanson
EMG (new version)
SGD Pickups

I'm probably missing a few, but that gets it started.

There's not much out there that's cheap, but I'll say, the Fender SCNs are a great pickup and can be found used quite often. They were the stock pickups in '03+ deluxe J basses. They have a great "classic-meets-modern" tone with 100% Fender voicing.

There's a used set on eBay right now for $199.........

Its really hard to escape the lower-mid charcer with the NJ4s.
I just F-in love that sound.

That will get me starting....Many thanks!Unfortunately shopping from ebay outside E.U. has customs fee charging. This particular bass was purchased through eBay from Washington DC for $250 and the greek customs charged me $146 fee!
