Jack Bruce

I once read Geezer Butler saying that after he watched Cream in concert, he decided he wanted to play bass. That prompted me into a feeding frenzy of Jack Bruce's amazing playing and powerful voice. What I learned most of all was just how evident our influences can be, even if the styles are somewhat different.

I agree. Tales of Brave Ulysses is as close to perfection as you can get for me.

Jack was amazing and will be missed.

I feel lucky to have to gotten to know him a bit through some work I did with Medeski. Very inspirational man.

On Friday I was in Frankfurt for a Tony Williams Lifetime tribute with Medeski, Terry Lynn Carrington etc and a number of the songs were dedicated to Jack given his work with Tony.

Amazing stuff.

I think he influenced my playing as much as my writing. I was so excited to learn the riffs to Tickets to Waterfalls back in the day - that you could steer a band melodically and kick it in the butt at the same - and all that on a bass guitar - was a true eye opener. And then he sang his ass off too. We saw him at the Milky Way show in Amsterdam that The Cuicoland Express live record was pulled from many years later. I have better memories of the show than the resulting record suggested to me. While his playing was kept simple, he sang fantastically that night and was on fire otherwise too - cursing out people who were smoking in the audience, lol. Very spirited show.

My favourite record will always be Songs For A Tailor.

The highlight of the Standing in the Shadows of Motown Jamerson book for me was the Jack Bruce rendition of Smokey Robinson's, (Come round here) I'm The One You Need. Bruce went for it as you would expect from him, playing the Jamerson part faithfully while imbuing it with his own spirit and fervor at the same time.

Jack was one of my first bass heroes growing up and reason I chose to play the bass. Some of the first songs I learned were Cream. What a trio. Seemed like a humble and great all around guy. Found out of his passing on FB from his family posting on his page, didn't believe it at first. Thanks for the influence and memories. I want to take you with me to the heartland of the winter!

Jack, Geezer, Geddy and Cliff... Not particularly unique influences but they've inspired me personally the most...and two of them are already gone. :(
Thankfully, I've gotten to see Geezer and Geddy live. Sad I will not have that opportunity with the great Jack Bruce!
