I'm seeing two opinions arise regarding the bass' place in a band. The most common seems to be, as Red Planet lamented, we are to be lockstep with the drum. The less common seems to be giving the bass its own voice. I'm of the latter mind. Heck, one doesn't hear bass and percussion lock stepped in orchestras.
My lead guitarist kept insisting I become the "drum" since our drummer never shows for practice. Playing my Casady, I ignored him. I still keep a beat, but add to the mix an extra voice--the BASS. He's seeing the value in having three musical voices (lead, rhythm, bass) with room for percussion.
Seriously, if my _only_ job is to keep the beat, then it's seems to me that the guitarists see little value in learning the song.
