I think, I couldn't care less, except for keeping a straight end cable for recessed jacks (strat or ibanez-style), my right angle plug of choice fits them as well (as well as a tele jack), but I don't like it visually.

most of my instruments have a side-mounted jack, but only because most instruments come that way. I don't really have a preference, any type is good for me.

I’m surprised there wasn’t this option: top jack, side jack with plug just to blow your mind :P

I like side jacks with right-angled plugs, and I mostly play my fives, which have that configuration. But my fours are top mounted, which is fine. It's not a big deal.

Both my guitars are Strats, so I need cables with straight plugs for those. (I don't like using right-angled plugs into the amp.) Oh well. I've never been averse to stockpiling gear, so I probably have a dozen gig-worthy cables in several lengths and about five different colors.

All right, this seems like it hasn't been beaten to death in a while, let's get a thread going on jack location. Show you know jack!

For my part, I like top jacks best, but not enough to avoid getting a bass with a side jack. For side jacks, I don't like recessed tele style, as I prefer right angle plugs for side jacks. Ibanez style recessed top jacks are RIGHT OUT!
Well...
Seeing as how I have 27 basses and 5 guitars - including a Strat copy with the typical Strat jack - I own something with the output jack in all the usual places. Do I care? Nah... not really. The only things I really care about are;
1. Remembering which output jack is which, on my 3 Rickenbackers, and
2. Wondering which barrel jack is going to fail next. I hate those things, but... the instruments that I own with them, seem to have been designed around the verkakte things, and the only thing I can replace them with is another one... :rollno:
