Actually, when I saw him in a small club in Florida in 1977, he used his MXR Digital Delay to store a loop, jammed over it, and then put his bass down and played drums with it for a few bars. So... looping, yes.

buzzzz! Try again. As has already been made clear, chorus pedals became available to the general public in the mid-70's. Just because you didn't hear of them shows nothing useful about Jaco. Studio chorus effects, not in pedal form, were available for a few years prior to that. And more to the point, you keep trying to twist things to defend your statements, saying you meant he couldn't have used chorus effects because he used no chorus pedals- when in fact nobody said anything about pedals, and chorus effects do not have to come from a pedal. In fact as has already been commented on by GB, and as you'd know if you had the slightest clue about effects, chorus and delay are the same thing just at different settings. The MXR digital delay (of which you finally admitted the existence) is also a chorus effect, and the video posted shows him dialing one of the two MXR units for a chorus effect. That is, if you are willing to believe your eyes and ears, rather than the claims made by an egomaniacal drug addict.

How would you know? By your replies it's pretty obvious you haven't read enough of it to speak in context.
I made a comment about what he would do now if alive today, he was one of the first persons to be looping live bar Les Paul of course so why is it wrong to assume that this is something he wouldn't be exploring today, I've made no comments as to what he was doing back in the day and I know he was using the MXR units mentioned by Bongo they are clear in the Shadows and Light dvd which is also how I know what type of looping he was doing back then.
But whatever, everyone in this thread seems dead set on ripping each other down.

Especially in the context of Jaco's time, double-tracking was tracking another overdub on TAPE tracks after having played the first one. Different than electronic doubling, though sometimes a rough approximation has been accomplished by bouncing/cloning a track and then running it through a slight delay and panning the two tracks differently.

When I saw him live, he had a rack mount delay. I don't recall the brand, but I do remember because I had one just like it, and was surprise he had the same thing. It was kind of inexpensive. He didn't use it as a delay, but he split his signal with it, and then ran the outputs to his two Acoustic 360s.
This gave the stereo chorus you hear on some of the live stuff. You set the delay with just one return, and very close like 80 ms or faster. Then you could modulate one side slightly, set the width and vary the speed. So it was true stereo chorus; one side dry, one side slightly being pulled in and out of tune slowly.
I think there was a pedal input, but I don't remember. I didn't have the pedal, and when he turned it on and off, he would just walk up to it and turn the knob so it was just two dry signals at that point. That's the only effect I ever saw.

I think that he also used light distortion. Not much, but it's noticeable if you listen closely. Like here: It's also one of the best bass videos on YouTube.

OP (@sirspoogesalot), are you talking about Jaco's use of harmonics? Given your newness to the instrument and the fact that you say "used in most of his songs" I'm getting the feeling this is what you're referring to instead of an effect.
As a reference, harmonics are used in the intro (and much of the rest) of Portrait of Tracy.
If this is what you mean, please confirm and we'll point you in the right direction to get that sound - it has absolutely nothing to do with effects - rack nor pedal.
