Jaco the world greatest bass player ...

I really appreciate Jeff Berlin too. There have been comparisons between the two through the years. Someone was interviewing him one time and the asked him why he doesn't play fretless. He responds that he would really sound like Jaco if he did that.
Is it ok to deeply respect his abilities and musicality, and also think his playing sounds like a fart machine gun?
I like the poster. To be truly "the best" I believe everyone would have to like. I respect the phenomenal player and musician he was. Truly he was a great but I personally didn't like the style fretless he played. I do not play like that and have little to no influence from him. In fact I don't play fretless like a fretless. I started playing on one out of necessity and developed a unique style from out of many 60s and 70s progressive neo-symphonic genres. So is he the greatest to me? Short answer is no but I respect all those who do love him and the work he did.
Hey! To all those who haven't, you might want check this out at your local library. I feel it is good reading. More definitive than the Robert Trujillo dedication. (Which I appreciate too)

There are MANY "self proclaimed" "the greatest/best" & it seems that they are synonymous with meeting an untimely demise at their own hands. It seems to me that the "humble" ones have the most longevity, love & respect!!

"Worlds Best Bass Player" is a moving target, obviously, there are 15 year olds who can play Teentown note for note, and 10 year olds who can play Eruption by Van Halen. Guys like Jaco demonstrate what was previously considered impossible, which makes it possible. He generated a whole new genre of bass playing, and I have yet to hear anybody play fretless "better". Tragic losing him to mental illness and addiction.
At least as long as the criteria by which this is measured are a bit fuzzy.

Art isn't something we can objectively rank, of course. Jaco stands out to this day because his playing just drips with personality - he is always killing it on recordings, and you always know who it is killing it.
100% yes. There's plenty of very, very smart people with high aptitude out there. Most of them still don't go on to do things like invent new branches of math or pull entire symphonies out of thin air.
