Jaco Tribute Bass Build

Since you are lucky enough to have Kevin doing the neck for you, I would ask him to put something on the back of the headstock like he did when he rebuilt Jaco's bass.

Maybe having him say he used the same process as he did for Jaco and say when and where he did it.
It doesn't really follow the exact replica idea, but would definitely add to the coolness factor and set it apart from anybody trying to make a copy in their kitchen!
It will also maintain that you aren't trying to be fraud, but are just doing everything in your power to honor him.
I imagine alot of CS owners would rather have a neck that was done and authenticated by Kevin :cool:
I know that I would rather have your bass that a CS (and I would LOVE to have a CS Jaco bass)!

I was thinking of asking Kevin this. Yes, it wouldn't be accurate, but it would make it ever more special. If he doesn't, I may have him autograph the back of the headstock.

I will have sound samples prepared. I'm really going to try to get Kevin to do that inscription on the back of the head stock.

My question: Do you think I should have Kevin put Jaco's or my name on the back of the head stock?

While this bass is in honor of Jaco, it is your bass built the way you want it.

I agree. But I would ask if he could also put that he used the same process as he did for Jaco, and when and where.

He managed to get alot of info on the back of Jaco's bass, so it can be done.

Just talk it over with him. He may come up with a perfect way of wording it for you. Something like:

"Defret and epoxy treatment applied with the same procedure as I personally did for Jaco Pastorious. Commissioned by BassGod. -Kevin Kaufman, location & date completed." is what I'm thinking.

i wish i had the patience for this! i want this to be done already!!! ...maybe meanwhile i'll get a tribute started also....

maybe i'll buy a squier VM fretless and get a new neck and relic the baby up...

Nah...I'd leave it as is. I just thought it was ironic/funny that Jaco's weren't spaced equally.:eek: If he were still around, I guess I'd nag Jaco to make his right too, LOL!

And yeah, I'm OCD too, so you are preaching to the choir! Maybe we should start an OCD bassist club! :D :bassist:

EDIT: I nagged BG about his Squier P bass tuners, not this Jaco tribute build. It's hard to keep up with BG, he's had at least 3 threads on different builds/mods at once here lately...I think I have pestered him in all of them!:hiding: ;)

This is an exciting thread to me. I think we are watching a great bass being born!
BassGod76 is avoiding cutting many corners and in the end it will pay off. He is going to have a bass that any Jaco fan would be envious of, IMHO.

When he is finished, I hope they make a sticky out of this build for inspiration.

TH, as much as I'd hate to admit it ;), I appreciate your input. It pushes me to do better. To not just accept, "Ah, that's good enough." Especially since this build is modeled after another bass. I've seen "Jaco" tributes on TB. While nice, you can just tell that all they basically did was remove the pick guard off a USA fretless and dubbed it as a Jaco tribute. While that is totally cool; I wanted to see if I could push the envelope, to rival the CS model.

I think I am going to have the inscription personalized with my name. This way I'm not accused of "forgery".

This weekend, I tried my had at removing the serial number. While I was successful, I took off quite a bit of finish. I tried using a couple sprays of tinted laquer, rubbed on some brown shoe polish, sanded her off and buffed her out. It's by no means perfect, but if Kevin autographs or inscribes this area, my "handy work" won't be that noticeable.

I also would vote for what THand wrote here, it's a nice touch. I remember seeing somewhere that Florida is spelled 'Flordia' or something like that on Jaco's bass. It would be cool if he does that on yours too. Just for fun, can you ask Kevin if that was intentional?
